Netent finally releases Dead or Alive 2 (and what a stunning video slot it is!)

launch-article-dead-or-alive-ii-netent-slot-review-mega-win-2

On April 24, 2019, Netent finally released the sequel to Dead or Alive: Dead or Alive 2.

netent-logoRarely were expectations as high as they were with Dead or Alive 2. The original has always been one of Netent’s biggest blockbusters for a long time, and the Swedish game maker has been searching for an opportunity to equal or surpass this success.

They seem to have gold in their hands with Dead or Alive 2: this slot works on all levels. Netent has really hit the sweet spot.

This slot looks stunning, has three exciting free spins features to choose from and you can win an astronomical amount of money: more than 100,000 x your bet!

Dead or Alive 2 has the following free spins bonuses:

  • Train Heist (low risk): Earn extra free spins and additional multipliers with each game.
  • Old Saloon (medium risk): This is the classic Dead or Alive bonus with free spins, sticky wilds and a 2 x multiplier.
  • High Noon Saloon (high risk): Earn sticky wilds with extra multipliers up to 4x.

Bets start at $€ 0.09 per spin, and that goes up to $€ 9 per spin. The theoretical payout rate is 96.8%.

In our Dead or Alive 2 slot review, we were delighted with this new Netent hit and rewarded the slot with a very high score of 4.5 stars out of 5.

6 reasons why Netent is failing miserably at the moment

6-reasons-Netent-fails-ozzy-osbourne-bonus-trigger

What’s the matter with Netent, the once so successful and influential Swedish slot provider?

netent-provider-logoThere was a time when online casinos lined up to partner with Netent, the creator of classic slots like Starburst, Dead or Alive, Jack and the Beanstalk, Twin Spin and Gonzo’s Quest.

And this is only a small sum-up of a vast list of their most successful slots.

How about Guns N’ Roses, The Invisible Man, Creature From The Black Lagoon and Piggy Riches?

These are quality slots, too, with well-executed themes, exciting bonus rounds, and entertaining gameplay.

The exciting feeling a new Netent slot used to evoke, has slowly disappeared.

If a new Netent slot used to be released, we couldn’t wait and were full of eager anticipation. The alarm clock was set, we deposited $€ 50 or $€ 100 at our favourite online casino, and with a nice cup of hot coffee, we settled in our seat to give the Netent slot that was about to premiere, a run for its money.

As soon as that characteristic green Netent logo appeared on the screen, we knew we were about to play something extraordinary.

The thrill, the build-up of excitement, it’s all gone.

Netent has slipped from a top-tier market leader to a somewhat dull mid-tier player. Not even in terms of turnover – Netent is still one of the largest providers – but in terms of relevance.

They are no longer determining the direction and new developments of the slot games industry

6-reasons-Netent-fails-Jack-and-the-beanstalk-netent-slot-review

It’s been a long time since Netent released a blockbuster like Jack and the Beanstalk.

Netent’s share price has been free-falling for years

Netent’s market share is declining, and its financial results are also disappointing. This can happen once in a while, but not year after year.

Whereas in the past Netent slots always dominated the online casino lobbies, we see more and more slots from other providers — a telltale of demise.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-netent-faalt-share-price

Netent gets severely penalized by investors for their poor performance. Netent’s share price reached its absolute peak in June of 2016 and was worth just over 91 Swedish Kronor (± $€ 10.92).

On 3 January 2020, the value of Netent shares fell to a very modest 26.1 Swedish kronor (± $€ 2.87). A decline of more than 71%, in just three and a half years.

Netent has always been the “Golden Boy” of the online casino industry but has lost that honorary title.

In 2018 Netent’s Board of Directors intervened hard and sent CEO Per Eriksson home. He was replaced by the former Netent CFO, Therese Hilman.

To date, this significant decision seems to have had little to no effect: Netent’s performance has only deteriorated since the replacement at the top.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-gold-money-frog-netent-slot-review

Slots like Gold Money Frog are nothing more than dull “Oriental” remakes of existing Netent titles.

Why is Netent failing so hard?

Netent has had a tough time last couple of years. They have lost a large part of their competitive edge, and market leadership and the companies share value is shrinking noticeably.

How did this happen? What crucial mistakes did Net Entertainment, Netent’s full name, make?

And how does Netent get back on its feet?

1. They focus more on quantity than quality

CEO Therese Hilman announced it at the beginning of 2019: Netent is going to release a lot more slots. The more slots, the more visibility in the online casinos and the more players will choose for Netent games, was the plan.

A simple strategy, you would think. The consequence, however, of Netent releasing a lot more slots in 2019 than we were used to, was an appalling quality of these titles.

Netent released two excellent slots in 2019: Reel Rush 2 and Dead or Alive 2. Indeed, both sequels. That indicates a lack of creativity.

Many of the other releases were Asian versions of famous slots like Twin Spin and Cosmic Fortune. Okay, for the Oriental market, but no use for North American and European markets.

Netent should have focused on developing unique, innovative and eye-catching slots instead of releasing endless spin-offs of old titles.

Even the Ozzy Osbourne slot, which should have been the hit of 2019, we qualified: “Nice, but no blockbuster.” When Netent uses such an iconic rock star as the theme, you have to go for it full throttle; third gear does not cut it.

2. There is too much competition from smaller, eager slot providers

Smaller companies usually much better-motivated employees than large companies. It is easier to get to the top than to sustain your market leadership. And young slot providers don’t feel shareholders breathing down their necks, yet.

So they dare to take risks much quicker. A new Netent slot has to be a success. Developers of a Push Gaming or Nolimit City slot, for example, do not feel that obligation. For them, it is a nice bonus if their slot performs more than okay. No pressure, that’s how most beautiful creations can arise, think of like slots like Jammin’ Jars and Pixies versus Pirates.

3. Players spend less money in their largest markets

Given their Scandinavian roots, Netent has always been enormously popular in countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Also, in English-speaking parts of the world, such as Australia and the United Kingdom, Netent slots were played a lot.

Mainly the strict regulation of the Swedish and UK markets and the mandatory withdrawal from the (very lucrative) Australian market have hurt Netent a lot.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-netent-fail-live-casino

In the lobby of the live casino, Netent games can hardly be found.

4. Their live casino games are no match to those of Evolution Gaming

Although Netent is best known for its online slots, they also have a big branch with live casino games: Netent Live.

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week Netent Live offers players the opportunity to play on live roulette, live blackjack and live baccarat. The quality of Netent Live’s games is certainly not bad, but are sub-par to the games of Evolution Gaming.

Again, we see that Netent is less able to innovate and amaze than its big competitor. With Netent Live, you won’t find any traffic-builders like Lightning Roulette and Monopoly Live.

5. Many of their best people started their own company or have been head-hunted by the competition.

It’s a bit like the effect successful national football/soccer clubs suffer from in the European Champions League: if you perform well in the Champions League, you’ll lose all your best players the next season.

Many of Netent’s most talented designers and creative minds became slot developers themselves and started their own successful businesses.

For example, two former Netent employees founded Quickspin. And there are countless other examples.

6. They are too distracted by other matters than making kick-ass slots

Instead of focusing on doing what they were always the best at, making market-leading slots, Netent is sometimes veering off course into a completely different direction.

For example, Netent began to act as an affiliate platform. Netent thinks visitors of their website not only want to try out their games but also want to gamble for real money afterwards.

By redirecting these players to an online casino, they earn a few extra bucks.

There’s nothing wrong with affiliate marketing, and of course, Netent is free to do what they like and to set up their website in any shape or form, but to us, it still comes across as a bit desperate and cheap.

Netent is a slots provider, not a casino portal, and they need to reflect that.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-wings-of-riches-slot-netent-review

Wings of Riches is a perfect example of a very poor, generic, Netent slot.

Is there still hope for Netent?

Can Netent still be saved? Of course, they can.

No other slot provider can draw on so much experience, know-how and contacts and such a broad portfolio of slots and casino games.

However, Netent needs to shift its focus and reinvent itself. Less conventional slots or clones of existing slots and more unique, original slots, with that classic Netent feeling.

Make sure you come up with something that no one has ever seen before – a new Megaways or a Lightning Roulette, something of that magnitude.

Then maybe it will all work out after all.

The evolution of maximum wins on Netent slots throughout the years

max wins on netent slots

Netent has released over 100 slots over the past decade. We thought it was about time to have a closer look at the maximum win of all these slots.

Especially after the release of Dead or Alive 2, where the maximum win tops a surreal 100,000x (100 thousand times!)  the bet.

One question that comes into our mind is whether Netent has decided to make the slots more volatile or not. Has Netent tried to keep up with the competition, which has also released more volatile slots since 2018?

We will go into this in a minute.

First, let’s briefly explain the phenomena of maximum wins.

What does the maximum win of a slot tell you exactly?

The maximum win (its all in the name) tells you what you can win if you get all the luck in the world. If the maximum win, for example, equals 1000x the bet, and you do a spin of $€10, the maximum amount you can win is a high $€10 thousand.

Yes, you are (almost entirely) right if you say that if the maximum win is higher than the slot variance (volatility) is higher. It is right in most of the cases, but not all cases.

Netent’s slot Pyramid, for example, has a maximum win of a staggering 36,000x the bet. But Netent qualifies this as a “medium to low variance” slot. It must imply that chances of getting such a maximum win are incredibly small (maybe once in very billion spins). Most top prizes of Pyramid will, therefore, not even top 500x the bet.

Another Netent slot, Joker Pro, has a maximum win of 1,000x the bet. It is much smaller, but the key difference is that this maximum prize is won much more often (around once every 50 thousand spins). It makes Joker Pro, according to Netent, a “high variance” slot.

So, yes, the maximum win is an excellent indicator of the slot variance, but there are exceptions. But in the case of, for example, Starburst, the maximum win is “only” 500x the bet. And this slot has, indeed, a low variance.

The maximum win can be, in some cases, a bit misleading. Many slots provide an enormous high maximum win (and also has the function of a cap), but at the same time, chances of actually getting this win are so incredibly small, that it does not say much.

max wins on netent slots

The maximum win of Netent slots

Now let’s go to the real deal.

Below is an overview of the maximum win of Netent slots by year of release.

max win of netent slots

For presentation reasons, we have capped the maximum win at 20,000x the bet.
For about 60% of all Netent slots, were we able to find out what the maximum win is. Usually, it is expressed in Coins. In 40% of the cases, unfortunately, Netent has not revealed what the maximum win is.

Netent is very open when it comes to the variance of slots, but not always so when it comes to the maximum win. Nevertheless, we managed to find out the maximum win of 80 Netent slots. For the slots Dead or Alive and Who’s the Bride?, it is not revealed by Netent what the maximum win is. We have estimated it to be over 10,000x the bet. For all other slots on this graph, it is disclosed by Netent.

It is interesting to see that Netent has decided to increase the maximum win of slots in 2018/2019. If you look closely, you see that slots released in the years 2012-2016 pretty much all had a maximum win below 2,000x the bet.

Exceptions were Dead or Alive, Mega Fortune Dreams (21000x the bet) and Pyramid (36,000x the bet).

But in 2019 alone, there were quite a few slots with a much higher maximum win, than what we have witnessed before: Ozzy Osbourne (maximum win of 10,000x the bet), Santa vs Rudolf (10,000x the bet), Who’s the Bride? (10,000x the bet) and of course Dead or Alive 2, with a maximum bet topping a surreal 100,000x the bet.

Also, you can see that more and more slots have a maximum win of 5,000x the bet. This was, except for Dead or Alive, not seen before.

Below is the average maximum win of Netent slots by release year.

Which Netent slots have the highest maximum win?

In the list below, you see the Netent slots with the highest maximum wins. We considered all slots up to and including 2019 (of which Netent provides the maximum win).

As you can see, most of the slots with a high maximum win, are relatively new. Of the top 10 slots (when it comes to the highest maximum win), half of them were released in 2019.

Could 2020 be an even better year for high maximum win Netent slots?

Why has Netent decided to increase the maximum win of slots in 2019?

It is clear that Netent has changed the mathematics of the slots and decided to increase the variance of slots.

Many players nowadays, fed by the slot streamers, are more and more interested in high variance slots. The idea of bagging a life-changing win is very appealing and is a guarantee for likes, shares and views on youtube, twitch and other streaming media.

Put in simple words: those players prefer slot with a maximum win of 10,000x the bet over slots with “just” a maximum win of 500x the bet.

Which Netent Slots have the highest and worst Return to Player?

Netent Slots with highest theoretical RTP and worst theoretical RTP

Netent has always had a reputation for creating online slots with a high Return to Player.

Netent, one of the top online slot providers, is well known for delivering slots with a better theoretical Return to Player (RTP) than most of the other providers.

Yes, you can say that Netent slots are lacking innovation lately. You can argue that their slots are lacking volatility, but you cannot disagree with the fact that most of their slots have a pretty good RTP.

Especially compared to other providers.

Why a higher Return to Player matters

The higher the RTP, the better it is for you as a player. If, for example, the RTP is 96%, it implies that (in the long run), you will lose $€4 after every $€100 you have wagered. But is the RTP would be 97%, you would “only” lose $€3 for every $€100 you have wagered.

You can argue that the 1% difference is not so significant. But it does matter — more than you think. You could, for example, have a balance of €100, but wager in total €500 (you play with your winnings as well).

  • If the RTP is 96%, you would expect to lose: $€500 x 4% = € 20
  • If the RTP is 97%, you would expect to lose: $€500 x 3% = € 15

You can see that the difference is already more substantial. And it becomes larger and larger, once you start to wager higher amounts.

The RTP has nothing to do with the volatility (or variance) of the slot. Variance says something about the variation of the sizes of wins.

High volatility slots pay out more top prizes (but less often).

Low variance slots pay out smaller prizes but do so more often.

The top 30 Netent slots with highest RTP

Below the top 30 list with slots with an excellent (or high) RTP. We have looked at all Netent slots up to (and including) 2019.

At the end of 2020, we will revise the list, if of course, Netent has managed to release new slots with such an excellent RTP.

Rank Name Year  RTP

28 Hooks Heroes 2015  96.82%
29 Who’s The Bride 2019  96.82%
30 Arcane Reel Chaos 2019  96.81%

The best-paying Netent slot is Mega Joker, with a theoretical RTP of 99%!

That is, of course, exceptional, and the RTP can only reach 99% if you play according to a certain way. It is a pretty old slot and not up to the 2019/2020 standards we expect from slots nowadays.

Other slots that are worthwhile mentioning are Blood Suckers (RTP of 98.00%), Guns N’ Roses (RTP of 96.98%), Reel Rush (RTP of 96.96%), Jack Hammer (96.96%), Dead Or Alive 2 96.82%) and Dead Or Alive (96.82%).

You can see that even immense popular slots are on the list, as well as slots with extreme volatility such as the Dead or Alive slots.

The 20 Netent slots with the lowest RTP

Even though Netent slots generally have a pretty good Return to Player, it is not the case for all Netent slots.

Below is a list of Netent slots with a poor RTP, and there are some real stinkers on there, with theoretical payout rates that are not up to par.

We have looked at all Netent slots up to (and including) 2019.

And yes, it is also good to know which slots you can better avoid.

Rank Name Year  RTP
1 Super Lucky Frog 2011  92.90%
2 Jackpot 6000 2011  95.00%
3 Excalibur 2011  95.08%
4 Ghost Pirates 2013  95.28%
5 Hall of Gods 2010  95.30%
6 Arabian Nights 2009  95.62%
7 The Reel Steal 2011  95.90%
8 Mega Fortune Dreams 2014  95.90%
9 Strolling Staxx 2019  95.95%
10 Gonzo’s Quest 2011  95.97%
11 Spellcast 2011  95.98%
12 Koi Princess 2015  96.00%
13 Mega Fortune 2009  96.00%
14 Wild-O-Tron 3000 2018  96.01%
15 Elements 2012  96.02%
16 Temple of Nudges 2019  96.03%
17 Vikings 2018  96.05
18 Archangels: Salvation 2018  96.08%
19 Starburst 2012  96.09%
20 Finn’s Golden Tavern 2019  96.10%

You can see that most (but not all) of the slots on this list are either “very old” and released in the earlier years OR are pretty unknown. And several slots did not become well known, simply because of the low RTP.

But you can also see that 2 of the most popular slots (certainly top 5 Netent slots of all time) are on this list as well: Starburst and Gonzo’s Quest.

RTP Netent slots

Why are there so many differences in the RTP of slots?

Netent tends to have a pretty considerable variation in the RTP. Why do these vary so much? It is not crystal clear why there are differences, but the main reasons we can think of are:

  • Generally, Netent needs to make a margin on slots. If they would “only” provide slots with a high RTP, the margin would not be high enough on a total level
  • Sometimes, players are not aware that there are so many differences and play a slot, as long as the RTP is at least 96%.
  • Providers try and see how far they can go with lowering RTP’s. If players accept slots with a lower RTP, why not trying?
  • Netent sometimes needs to make a considerable investment, in particular, for very attractive slots (think of slots as Vikings or Planet of the Apes). These are slots with enormous investments, that need to be earned back
  • Pressures from competitors differ over time. If there is more competition, it could imply that the RTP os slots improve. We do, however, see that the RTP of several providers has worsened throughout 2019. So if more providers lower the RTP’s, Netent has more “room” to do the same. And for several slots they have.

The picture below shows the development of the RTP of all netent slots from 2012 till the end of 2019.

You can see that almost all slots have an RTP between 96% and 97%. But also that more slots released in 2018 and 2019 are closer to the “lower” 96% than was the case for slot released in the years from 2015 to 2017.

And indeed, more providers are releasing slots with a lower RTP.

Conclusions – Most Netent slots have a pretty good RTP, but not all of them

We conclude that Netent slots generally have a better RTP than most other providers. But there are substantial differences, and you should always check the RTP of a slot before you start playing.

There is no need to play slots with a poor RTP (96%) if there are plenty of slots with high RTP (or close to 97%).

You don’t have to throw away money out of the window if there is no need to do so!

What are the 10 best WMS slots?

10 best WMS slots-montezuma-wms-bonus-retriggerWMS is an American casino games producer that is especially popular in land-based casinos.

wms_logoIf you’ve ever visited a brick and mortar casino near you, perhaps even a casino in Las Vegas, and played a video slot there, chances are it was a WMS slot.

WMS slots were simply head and shoulders above the rest for years. Their slots had well thought-out and equally well-executed themes, innovative bonus features and always a high entertainment factor.

In one way or another, WMS slots are almost always unique and extremely entertaining. The company is even responsible for the very first video slot with a bonus feature: the classic Reel Em In, which was released in 1996.

In recent years, WMS has lagged somewhat and is finding it more challenging to fulfil the role of the absolute trendsetter.

WMS is part of the mighty Scientific Games and releases online versions of their best-known titles under the Williams Interactive name.

These are the 10 best WMS slots

Since the release of the slot mentioned above, Reel Em In, WMS has released hundreds of video slots.

Many of these titles can be found at online casinos, although unfortunately, they haven’t transferred all of their best slots to their online platform. Case in point, we are still waiting for an online version of our favourite slot of all time: The Princess Bride.

Fortunately, many classics of WMS can be played online. Whose heart doesn’t start to beat faster with epic WMS titles like Raging Rhino, Bierhaus and Kronos?

We still regularly play the slots of WMS at a reputable online casino.

Are you ready?

These are our ten favourite WMS slots:

1. The Princess Bride

10 best WMS slots-the-princess-bride-300x169If we could make one wish come true (except for a world without war and hunger), we would opt for an online version of The Princess Bride.

This video slot, which is based on the fantastic, funny, smart, sweet and brilliant film of the same name (yes, we are fans), is unfortunately almost nowhere to be found anymore.

It has been removed from every landbased casino and can no longer be found in Las Vegas either. Believe us; we’ve searched every nook and cranny of every Las Vegas casino.

So, we have to make do with the memories. The mystery bonuses with the giant, the infamous poison cup swap bonus, the Swamp bonus with the sticky wilds and other bonus boosters.

This slot was not only a perfect example of how to design a brilliant video slot; it was also a celebration of the film.

So, WMS, we beg you: PLEASE RELEASE ONLINE VERSION OF THE PRINCESS BRIDE SLOT!

Here is a nice clip with a good cross-section of the bonus features of The Princes Bride slot machine.

2. Bier Haus

10 best WMS slots-bier-haus-review-wms-300x240Bier Haus is a hi-la-ri-ous and iconic slot from WMS, which revolves around the famous German Oktoberfest.

That means in this case: oompah music, beautiful blond and well-shaped waitresses, yodelling Gunthers and above all a lot of beer.

The free spin bonus can generate a lot of money through sticky wilds, extra wilds (the beer mugs) and frequent retriggers. Heidi! Heidi! Wunderbar!

Bier Haus was so successful that many (equally fun) sequels were released by WMS, including Bier Haus 200 and Heidi’s Bier Haus. Also, there are many clones of this slot released by other, less talented game developers.

In short: one of the nicest slots van WMS.

Check out the Bier Haus slot at Casumo.

3. Raging Rhino

10 best WMS slots-raging-rhino-beste-wms-slot-300x240Raging Rhino is what you call a real classic. This video slot has it all: super cool graphics, an equally cool free spin bonus and a high variance.

With win all ways, wild multipliers in the bonus and unlimited retriggers, Raging Rhino is a slot with which you can win an awful lot of money.

This WMS slot turned out to be so popular that in the interim dozens of clones have been produced. It shows once again what a leading role WMS has always had in the casino industry.

Check out the Raging Rhino slot at Casumo.

4. Kronos

10 best WMS slots-kronos-beste-wms-slot-300x240Kronos is probably the most famous WMS slot and certainly one of the best they have ever made.

The tough Kronos looks at you almost contemptuously and makes it clear: Don’t mess with me kid.

Luckily, this high variance top-of-the-line slot regularly gives players huge payouts with the free spin bonus.

Here, with the stacked wilds and stacked Kronos symbols, you can drag in the big prizes from both sides.

Kronos is a very volatile video slot: it can make you or break you, and of course, you have to be able to handle that.

Check out the Kronos slot at Casumo.

5. Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers

10 best WMS slots-best -slot-wms-300x240If you had to write a manual on how to make the perfect video slot, Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers might be the subject of the first chapter.

Everything about the Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers is spot on: the famous movie theme, the super design, the great bonuses and of course the heel-clicking red shoes.

Win free spins with bonus boosters, an exciting and potentially very lucrative pick and click bonus or grab a mystery prize. Of course, the well-known flying air bubbles, which contain expanding wilds, are present as well.

We have played on this slot for many hours, both online and at land-based casinos. A delightful dreamy slot, which takes you to a strange and wonderful world. The world of OZ.

Check out the Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers slot at Slots Million.

6. Montezuma

10 best WMS slots-montezuma-slot-review-wms-300x240Montezuma is also a popular slot by WMS that has already been copied by many other slot providers but has by no means been equalled.

The great strength of this beautifully designed “Aztec” slot is the unique free spin bonus, where you can earn extra multipliers up to 10 x, and unlimited retriggers with the multiplier that is active at that moment.

That is how it is possible to suddenly get 20 to 40 free spins with a 10 x multiplier.

And then your balance can ratchet up extremely fast all of a sudden.

Montezuma is a small masterpiece and fortunately gets all the praise it so deserves from players: this is one of the most played WMS slots.

Check out the Montezuma slot at Casumo.

7. Cool Jewels

10 best WMS slots-cool-jewels-best-slot-wms-300x240Cool Jewels might not be as well known as the other WMS slots on this top 10 list, but certainly one of the most fun ones.

It is a video slot that was produced with the casual game player in mind. It resembles slots like Bejeweled a lot.

You play the game on a matrix of 6 x 6 symbols, where you have to make clusters of 3 or more of the same symbols. Winning symbols disappear and make way for new ones so that you can create multiple winning combos in a row.

The more winning combinations in a row, the more the symbols are worth. There are also special symbols that can change into wilds, multipliers, bombs and even sticky wilds.

It is also possible to win free spins, where you play with even more special symbols in the game, which will bring you a lot of extra chances.

Check out the Cool Jewels slot at Casumo.

8. Heidi’s Bier Haus

10 best WMS slots-heidis-bier-haus-slot-review-wms-300x240The great success of the original Bier Haus had to lead to several sequels. WMS soon released derivative Bier Haus slots such as Heidi 200, Colossal Bier Haus and Heidi’s Bier Haus.

The latter, Heidi’s Bier Haus, is also in this top 10 of best WMS slots. We think Heidi 200 is just as good, but three Bier Haus slots in a top 10 were just a bit too much for us.

All known ingredients will be present in this slot: Heather, the smiling Gunther, wonderfully catchy singing and lots of bonus features.

This time Heidi is prominently behind the tap and lets the beer flow generously regularly, transforming entire reels into wilds.

The Heidi slots are somewhat similar to what we have with the music (and the ladies!) of ABBA: we love it, and we’re not afraid to show it to the world anymore.

Cheers!

Check out the Heidi’s Bier Haus slot at Casumo.

9. Amazon Queen

10 best WMS slots-amazon-queen-slot-300x240Amazon Queen resembles the Kronos slot in many ways: a high variance and free spins with stacked wilds and stacked premium symbols.

It is, however, a slot that can stand on its own. Amazon Queen might have been released even earlier than Kronos.

Anyway: the beautiful jungle theme has been worked out in detail, and the animation of the gorilla pounding on his chest is just superb craftsmanship of the design team of WMS. Maybe it’s weird, but we can enjoy that kind of thing.

One of the things that is still on our slots bucket list is to spin a full screen of gorillas in Amazon Queen. And until that wish is fulfilled, we will continue to play Amazon Queen with great pleasure.

Check out the Amazon Queen slot at Casumo.

10. Fire Queen

On the last spot of this beautiful list, we have chosen Fire Queen.10 best WMS slots-fire-queen-slot-review-300x240

This is perhaps the least known of all the slots on this top 10 list, and that is precisely why we have put it on.

Fire Queen is an amazingly cool slot with many innovative features, which deserves to be discovered.

You can activate the free spins bonus in 3 different ways; there are transferring wilds and the wilds in the bonus round expand all over the screen.

And man, what a beautiful sight WMS has made of Fire Queen.

Check out the Fire Queen slot at Casumo.

Try WMS slots yourself

With Fire Queen, we close this top 10 list with ten great WMS slots.

If there are titles on this list that you don’t know yet, it’s high time to discover them.

5 things you never knew about the Book of Ra slot

Book-of-Ra-deluxe-top-5-unknown-book-of-ra-slot-factsBook of Ra is a classic slot in a league of its own, comparable with Starburst, Kronos and Bier Haus.

Book of Ra is one of those slots that every slots player knows and has played at least once in his or her life and has that instant recognizability.

The Book of Ra slot was made by Novomatic, a very big and successful Austrian software developer.

The theme of Book of Ra is Egyptian Mythology combined with an Indiana Jones-like explorer/adventure theme.

A fun theme, but nothing we haven’t seen before.

Book of Ra’s unique bonus mechanism

So what set the Book of Ra apart then? It has a unique bonus mechanism, whereby you win free spins with a special symbol. This special symbol can drop on the reels scattered. When that happens, the symbol expands and all paylines are active, regardless of where on the reels the symbols are located.

Do you have 5 scattered symbols? Then you have expanding symbols over 5 reels on your hands- a full screen with the same symbols.

And that really brings to the heart of the matter of why the Book of Ra slot is so immensely popular: you can win extraordinary amounts of money with this high variance slot.

So, it’s about time for us to look at Book of Ra a bit closer and dig around a little; perhaps a bit more than you are used to.

5 things you never knew about the Book of Ra slot

book-of-ra-novomatic-top-5-unknown-book-of-ra-slot-facts

1. Ra is the god of the sun

Ra (a.k.a. Re) was the sun god. He was one of the most revered and important gods of Egyptian mythology. Often associated with other gods such as Khepri (as morning sun) and with Atum (as evening sun).

So then what is this Book of Ra? This is a complete fabrication of Novomatic, the game provider that dreamed up Book of Ra. There is no such thing as a book of Ra, and there is no mention of it in Egyptian mythology.

We do have to admit it does sound rather cool, though.

2. Book of Ra is the most popular slot of all time in Germany.

The Book of Ra slot is without a doubt the most popular online and land-based slot in Germany. In every casino, arcade or gambling den you are almost overwhelmed with Book of Ra or one of the official other versions, such as Book of Ra Deluxe and Book of Ra 6 (with 6 reels).

3. A full screen with explorers is worth 5,000 x your total bet

In the online version of the original Book of Ra, the ultimate prize is a full screen with explorers. Book of Ra players sometimes see this as finding the Holy Grail. Your life only now has become meaningful after you succeeded in spinning 5 scattered explorers during the free spin.

These expand over all the reels, causing you to see a screen full of explorers, the highest paying symbol.

This brilliant combination is worth a mouth-watering 5,000 x your total bet per spin (based on 10 active paylines). Unfortunately, we have never been able to do it to date, but we persevere.

Maybe, one day!

4. Book of Ra is the most copied slot ever

The success of Book of Ra has led to dozens of copies of the slot by competing game providers. A small sample of Book of Ra copies: Book of Aztec and Book of Fortune (both by Amatic), Ramses Book (Gamomat) and Magic Mirror (Merkur).

All are shameless clones of the real Book of Ra slot, with the same game mechanism and the same expanding Symbols in the bonus round.

But the best known Book of Ra clone has to be Book of Dead by Play’nGo. This slot has itself become one of the most popular online slots in many online casinos. More popular even than Starburst or Jack and the Beanstalk. And that means you’re popular.

Book-of-dead-Play-n-Go-top-5-unknown-book-of-ra-slot-facts

5. Online versions of Book of Ra pay out up to 15% more

The online versions of Book of Ra pay out a lot more than the land-based versions of the same slot. It is estimated that the offline versions of Book of Ra have a payout rate somewhere between 80% and 90%. Compare that percentage with the 3 most important online versions of the Book of Ra slot:

  • Book of Ra: 94.26%
  • Book of Ra Deluxe: 95.1%
  • Book of Ra Deluxe 6: 95.06%

As you can see, Book of Ra Deluxe on average pays out the most out of these three variants. But all three online versions of Book of Ra pay out considerably more than the Book of Ra slots you will find in a slots parlour or land-based casino. That difference can be as much as 15%.

Would you like to play Book of Ra yourself?

We can imagine that after reading these five facts about the Book of Ra slot, you want to go and play it yourself.

Unfortunately Greentube, the online arm of Novomatic, no longer offers the Book of Ra slot in every country. That may change in the future, but that is the way it is now.

Of course, the closest you can get to the Book of Ra slot is with Book of Dead. That slot you play, amongst others with the online casino of Casumo.

Where can you find Book of Dead?

The Book of Dead slot is found at all reliable Play’n GO casinos. One of these Play’n GO casinos is Casumo, which is one of our favourite online casinos.

You can play the Book of Dead slot at Casumo with a 200% bonus up to $€ 50 plus 200 free spins.

A few more tips for beginning online casino players

The online casino world can be quite overwhelming. You have so much choice between online casinos, and how do you know which casino to trust? They all look beautiful, and they all have a lot of casino games. The good news is, most online casinos are trustworthy.

The bad news is, there are still online casinos that are not reliable. They don’t pay out promptly, or sometimes they don’t pay out at all. And there are online casinos that work with hacked and copied software. It looks like the game belongs to a respected game provider, but in reality, you are being cheated, and they pay out far less than the official version.

To help you choose a safe and reliable online casino, we have created a top 10 online casinos. In this top 10 are only casinos that we have tested ourselves with real money and have had good experiences with.

Also, don’t forget online casinos give away a casino welcome bonus to new players. In this way, a casino doubles your first deposit, and there are even gambling sites that triple your first deposit.

Ready to play?

Choose one of the online casinos below, and you can rest assured that you’ll find your way to a good and reliable casino.

These premium symbols are placed on the reels and then you can top up extra wilds and multipliers.

There is also a Buy a Bonus option with three different purchase prices depending on your progress in the game.

Piggy Riches Megaways (Red Tiger Gaming)

new-2020-slots-piggy-riches-megaways-slot-review-bonus-big-win

Piggy Riches Megaways is the first collaboration of many to come between Netent and Red Tiger. The Megaways mechanism is provided by Red Tiger, and Netent provides the theme and brand awareness of classic online slots. In this case the old classic Piggy Riches, one of Netent’s greatest success stories, is transformed into a Megaways slot.

We dearly hope many more of these collaborations will follow, as Piggy Riches Megaways is one of the most fun Megaways slots we’ve played lately.

This game is top-notch, has an enjoyable fast pace, and contains all kinds of neat extras, such as stacked wilds with extra multipliers, and extra spins you earn with a few scatters.

If you are a fan of Megaways slots, then Piggy Riches Megaways is an absolute must.

Skulls Up! (Quickspin)

skulls-up-new slot

Skulls Up! is a showcase Quickspin video slot: they always look stunning, have well thought out and original bonus features and nicely developed themes. Based on the picture we figure you are aware it is pirates that rule this slot.

With a handsome RTP of 96.29% and high variance, this video slot will seduce many slot players. When you, as a high roller, max bet you can reward yourself with a big payday of no less than $€ 365,000.

Arrrrr, matey! That’s serious money!

Book of Atem (Microgaming)

book-of-atem-slot-new 2020

Book of Atem is a run of the mill Book of Ra clone, although they swapped out Ra for Atem.

Then again, Atem created all Egyptian gods, so he is THE boss. The status of this uber god is, unfortunately, for Atem, not reflected in the design of this slot, solid and beautiful, but not very distinctive.

We do believe Book of Ra fans will appreciate this medium variance slot with free spins and special expanding symbols!

[flytonic-button text=’Play Book of Atem with a 100% bonus up to $€ 300′ linkurl=’http://superbigwin.com/play/casumo’ size=’med’ icon=’check’ bg_color=’green’ text_color=’lgt’ ]

Jewel Scarabs (Red Tiger Gaming)

jewel-scarabs-new slot 2020

Red Tiger introduced another Egyptian themed medium variance slot. The beautiful thing about Jewel Scarabs? This slot can be very lucrative: the maximum payout per game round is an impressive 5,245 x the total bet.

Win free spins with roaming wilds and progressive multipliers: the bonus round feels like a miniature, 5-reel version of Jammin’ Jars.

A nice appetizer at the beginning of this year with big multipliers!

Sweet Success Megaways (Blueprint Gaming)

You do not need a sweet tooth to appreciate the way Blueprint Gaming implemented the Megaways concept. If you like the Megaways win all ways mechanism and a Deal or No Deal feature, then this slot is worth a try.

Esqueleto Explosivo 2 (Thunderkick)

new slot thunderkick 2020

If you were a fan of Esqueleto Explosivo, we imagine you will also be happy to know our beloved Mariachi band of skeletons made it to the sequel!

Thunderkick must have thought that there was room for improvement, and we are happy with the changes they implemented.  They enhanced the variance and added a free spins bonus with a potent x 64 multiplier.

Esqueleto Explosivo 2 comes highly recommended. You might very well be humming this video slot’s catchy tune for the rest of the week, enjoying the big celebrations.

Buffalo King (Pragmatic Play)

buffalo-king-new slot 2020

Buffalo King is clearly a cross between the online Raging Rhino (WMS) slot and Aristocrat’s Buffalo slot machine. The slot is themed around the Southwest of the United States, where the Buffalo grazes the vast plains.

Beware these are no ordinary buffalo’s these slot buffalos can generate, in theory, super super (this is not a spelling error) big wins of 93,750 x the total bet, which amounts to over $€ 5.6 million when playing with maximum stakes of 100 euro per spin.

Are you ready to take the buffalo by the horns? Beware of the very high variance.

[flytonic-button text=’Play Buffalo King with a 100% bonus up to $€ 300′ linkurl=’http://superbigwin.com/play/casumo’ size=’med’ icon=’check’ bg_color=’green’ text_color=’lgt’ ]

Wildhound Derby (Play’n GO)

new-2020-video-slots-wildhound-derby-slot-review-playn-go

Wildhound Derby takes you to the wonderful world of dog racing.

This new video slot from Play’n GO starts off a bit tame during the base game but comes alive during the free spins bonus. Choose a dog and earn free spins until one of the contestants reaches the finish line.

Once your dog has won, the riches come your way, and you get a multiplier of up to x 15 on your free spins winnings!

Gold Money Frog (Netent)

gold-money-frog-netent new slot 2020

Gold Money Frog is an Oriental remake of Super Lucky Frog. Netent had already started re-releasing some of their most popular slots in 2019, but now with an Asian flavour.

Whether Gold Money Frog is the best candidate for that, we doubt it. As far as we’re concerned, it’s already one of the weakest releases of the year 2020.

The game has an appallingly low payout rate of less than 93%. That RTP will be even more depressed after the contributions to the three progressive jackpots have been made. Moreover, the gameplay is dull and uninspired.

How Netent can shoot itself in the foot this early in the new year with Gold Money Frog, is beyond us. We hope they will recover and come up with something better… in a hurry.

[flytonic-button text=’Play Gold Money Frog with a 100% bonus up to $€ 300′ linkurl=’http://superbigwin.com/play/casumo’ size=’med’ icon=’check’ bg_color=’green’ text_color=’lgt’ ]

Poison Eve (Nolimit City)

poison-eve-slot-new 2020

Poison Eve is a Nolimit City high variance video slot with a cute and colourful theme and severe potential for big wins. You can make more than 6,000 x the bet with the free spins bonus, but also the mini-feature can be very lucrative: up to 2,000 x the stake.

The free spins bonus is also very original: it is mildly inspired by Book of Dead but is otherwise a completely new experience.

Poison Eve is a fascinating and well-produced slot like we are used to from Nolimit City.

[flytonic-button text=’Play Poison Eve with a 100% bonus up to $€ 300′ linkurl=’http://superbigwin.com/play/casumo’ size=’med’ icon=’check’ bg_color=’green’ text_color=’lgt’ ]

Aztec Gold Megaways (iSoftbet)

new-2020-video-slots-aztec-gold-megaways-slot-review-bonus

Aztec Gold Megaways is a superb Megaways slot, the first of the hard-working slot developer iSoftbet.

If this is what they bring to the table in 2020, we say: bring it on!

This slot has up to 117,649 Megaways, avalanche symbols, high variance and the chance to win up to 19,200 x your total bet. The main bonus feature is something completely new: spin for cash prizes up to 1,000 x the bet and win additional multipliers by completely stacking the reels.

Aztec Gold Megaways is a rock-solid new release, which all Megaways Slots-aficionados should check out.

What are the best-paying Elk Studios slots?

best-paying-elk-slot-compare-average-slot-Micro-Knights-Elk-Studios

The Return to Player (RTP) of Elk Studios slots are not bad at all, but none are spectacular either.

Elk Studios released 33 video slots from 2015 up to 2019 and is knocking on the doors of the larger slot providers. Elk Studios has and is delivering high-quality slots.

We see that the new Elk slots are played much more often and are competing against the leading providers like Netent or Play’n GO.

SuperBigWin already reviewed a lot of Elk Studios slots. We even compiled our top 10 list of best Elk slots for you.

Why a higher Return to Player matters

The higher the RTP, the better it is for you as a player. If, for example, the RTP is 96%, it implies that (in the long run), you will lose $€4 after every $€100 you have wagered.

But would the RTP be 97%, you would “only” lose $€3 after every $€100 you have wagered.

Low variance slots pay out smaller prizes (but more often).

How do the payout rates of Elk slots compare to the average for online slots?

We compared the RTP’s of the 33 Elk Studios slots (up to 2019) with the RTP’s of slots of 16 of the more prominent providers (1215 slots released since 2012).

You see that most of the Elk Studios slots (the red coloured dots) are very close to the green coloured line, the average RTP of the slots, which is around 96.25%.

None of the Elk slots is above the 96.5% mark, which is a bit of a blow. On the other hand, though, only 1 Elk slot is below the critical 96% mark.

You also see that about half of grey coloured dots (representing the RTP’s of the slots of 16 other providers) are below the red dots and about half above the red dots.

RTP Elk slots

Conclusions –Elk Studios’ slots have average RTP’s: not bad but also not great

Elk Studios slots (except for one) all have an RTP between 96% and 96.4%. Therefore, there is no reason not to play, as the RTP’s are around average.

If you are looking for slots with a higher RTP, you need to look elsewhere, though.

So why is Elk Studios so successful despite their average RTP rates? You could argue that when a game studio can create a superior gaming experience, a developer can command a higher “price” (award a lower RTP) for their gaming service.

Elk studios is one of our favourites just because of their ability to release slots with superb gameplay. This radiates positively on the Elk Studios brand name and its brand added value.

Similarly, this is why some game developers have to “pay” more/can only command a lower “price” (award a higher RTP). They lack the brand added value or superior gameplay to draw in the crowds.

The other way around, unfortunately, is also true.

Take, for example, Netent’s troubles. They used to introduce top-level video slots. Only over the years, they lost talented creatives and developers, and they are, currently, not able to wow and surprise the slot player with new slots.

Slowly but surely, all the remakes and sequels are eroding the brand, and are alienating their loyal slot players.

What are the best-paying Megaways slots?

best paying megaways slots

Some Megaways slots have outstanding payout rates. Some have poor payout rates.

Big Time Gaming started to release the first Megaways slots in 2016. Needless to say that these slots have become incredibly popular. So popular that many providers have bought a license from Big Time Gaming to release their own Megaways slots.

Blueprint Gaming is now the biggest producer of Megaways slots, but providers like Red Tiger Gaming, Stakelogic have also released quite a few Megaways slots. Not to mention providers as Bally, Relax Gaming, WMS, Iron Dog and many more.

With that enormous offering of Megaways slots, one question that comes to mind (besides what the best Megaways slots are), is: which Megaways slots have the best pay our percentages?

Which Megaways slots have the highest RTP, and which ones the lowest?

What’s interesting is the enormous differences we see in the Return to Player (RTP) of Megaways slots. Some have high RTP’s above 96.5%, but some have an RTP well below 96% and some even an RTP of a pitiful 95%.

Conclusion: the Return to Player percentages of Megaways slots differ hugely.

It is, therefore, essential to know which ones have the better RTP’s and which ones have the worse RTP’s.

The 20 Megaways slots with the lowest RTP

19 Return of Kong Megaways™ 2019 96.03%
20 Gods of Olympus Megaways™ 2019 96.03%

There are 13 slots out there with an RTP below the 96% mark.

Why play these Megaways slots with a poor RTP, if there are more than sufficient Megaways slots with a higher RTP?

Interesting: Wish upon a Leprechaun Megaways, Eye of Horus Megaways, Mystery Spin Deluxe Megaways and Luck O’The Irish Megaways are all Blueprint Gaming slots.

Also interesting: Golden Leprechaun MegaWays, Dragons Fire Megaways and Dragons Luck Megaways are all Red Tiger Gaming slots. Red Tiger is when it comes to the RTP’s, not the most generous provider (and that’s an understatement).

Why a higher RTP matters

The higher the RTP, the better it is for you as a player. If, for example, the RTP is 96%, it implies that (in the long run), you will lose $€4 after every $€100 you have wagered.

But would the RTP be 97%, you would “only” lose $€3 after every $€100 you have wagered.

Low variance slots pay out smaller prizes (but more often).

How about the 2020 Megaways slots?

The start has been spectacular as many more Megaways slots have been released in the first 2-3 months of 2020. Below, the list of what we have seen up to now.

Buffalo Rising All Action Megaways™ Blueprint 97.01%
Rick and Morty Megaways™ Blueprint 96.55%
Montezuma Megaways™ WMS 96.28%
Super Wild Megaways™ Stakelogic 96.07%
Sweet Success Megaways™ Blueprint 96.06%
Piggy Riches Megaways™ Red Tiger 95.71%
Wish Upon a Jackpot Megaways™ Blueprint 95.50%

The more than good news for Megaways lovers: Buffalo Rising All Action Megaways (of Blueprint Gaming) has an RTP of 97.01%.

At the same time, there are also Megaways slots you should avoid. Piggy Riches Megaways has an RTP of a low 95.71% and Wish upon a Jackpot Megaways an RTP of a mere 95.5%. Again, why should you consider playing these slots, if there are better alternatives?

How do the payout rates of Megaways slots compare to “normal” online slots?

We started also compared the RTP’s of the 59 Megaways slots (up to and including 2019) to the RTP’s of slots of 16 providers (1,215 slots released since 2012).

You see that about half of the Megaways slots (the red coloured dots) have an RTP above the green coloured line, the average RTP of the slots, which is around 96.25%.

You can also see that many grey coloured dots (representing the RTP’s of the slots of 16 other providers) are above, but also below the red dots (representing the RTP’s of the Megaways slots).

Conclusion: some Megaways slots have an outstanding RTP, but there are some stinkers out there

We conclude that some Megaways slots have an excellent RTP, above the 96.5% mark.

Unfortunately, there are enough Megaways slots with poor RTP’s.
