When we first saw the name of the new Netent slot, Spinsane, we were very excited.

netent-logoSpinsane stands for spinning + insane. So what we expected was total madness, with banging bonus features, bright colours and huge prizes.

However, this slot is quite disappointing. Netent should have called it Greydom, a combination of grey + boredom.

Spinsane has a classic look, with mechanical reels and a LED screen. In some cases that can work fine, just as in Elk’s Ivanhoe slot, for example.

But in this case, it looks cheap and shabby. And above all: very, very grey.

Furthermore, it is a game where a lot is happening, and a lot isn’t.

There are lots of short, moments that build up suspense and fake respins. At the beginning that’s still fun, but at a certain point, you’ll get fed up with it.

Netent has attempted to make a copy of a land-based video slot, that suits those visual and audio tricks very well. But as you know, an online casino is not a land-based casino and vice versa.

How does the Spinsane slot work?

Spinsane is played on 5 reels with 3 rows of symbols.

The paylines (there are 27) are divided over the reels in somewhat different ways. For example, the classic “V” and reverse “V” form are missing from the game. This is especially annoying because sometimes you think you have a 5-of-a-kind and then it turns out to be no prize at all. The other way around, of course, is the same, but then after winning a prize, you have no idea where it came from.

Bets are made from $€ 0.10 per turn. That will undoubtedly appeal to the recreational gambler. For the high roller, it can also be a lot of fun: the maximum bet is no less than $€ 500.

The theoretical payout rate is a bit disappointing: 96.26%.

Spinsane has a medium variance, and in theory, it is possible to win 5,000 x the total bet. In any case, we wouldn’t count on it too much: the bonus features we won were full of retriggers and winning spins, but 9 times out of 10 they yielded very little.

Symbols and payouts

The wild symbol replaces all other symbols except the scatters.

These are the three symbols in the game:

  • The wolf (500 coins for a 5-of-a-kind)
  • The leg (100 coins)
  • The tooth (25 coins)

The symbols come in two forms: the regular and the Super Symbol. The latter can be recognised by the three scratches of the wolf’s paw, that have been pulled through the symbol.

The Super Symbol always pays 10 x the regular payout for that symbol.

Free spins bonus

Five or more scatters activate Spinsane’s free spins bonus.

Each scatter awards 2 free spins. So you can get a maximum of 30 free spins and a minimum of 10 free spins.

During the free spins, one reel is always made entirely wild.

Each new scatter gives you +1 free spin.

Our verdict on the Spinsane slot?

Spinsane looks like a failed experiment by Netent. In terms of design, the game is unworthy of this great Swedish game developer: this slot seems to have been designed by an (untalented) 1st-year graphic designer.

The gameplay doesn’t get us excited either. It’s all hectic and with a lot of fuss, but in the end, this is a straightforward slot with a bit of a boring free spins bonus.

You can hardly recognise the Super Spins, which provide 10 x the normal payout, and that’s a pity because this way you lose a lot of suspense.

2.5 out of 5 stars.
