Prize distribution of online slots explained

Mystery-Joker-6000-mega-big-win

How high are prizes of low, medium and high variance slots? And just how often are the massive prizes paid out?

Slots have their mysteries….we all know that some slots can pay out enormous amounts of money.

However, nobody ever tells how often these massive prizes are won.

Is it realistic to win such prizes?

Doesn’t it bother you, if some highly reputable gambling websites or forums tell you that you need to find out for yourself? When you are “advised” to make thousands of spins per slot, to get an idea of the size of prizes paid out by the slot.

So, putting it bluntly, you need to do thousands and thousands of spins. At your expense and your valuable time. Preferable for as many slots as possible, to understand better what the slots payout.

We felt we should do what others failed to do and help you.

We did this research and “tested” over 50 of the most popular slots, by performing extensive surveys (5,000 spins per slot with real money).

Additionally, we examined the web to get more information on prizes these slots payout. Our research was indeed costly and exceptionally time-consuming. It took months! Imagine, you having to do all this work like you have nothing better to do…

In this article, we share with you, our findings. We counted how often certain prizes are paid out. We tried to understand the vast differences between the SIZE AND FREQUENCY of prizes paid out by low, medium or high variance slots.

We classify four different types of slots: low, medium, high and extremely high variance slots

We learnt that there are significant differences in the kind of prizes paid out by slots. Looking more closely, we found out that slots belong to one of the four kind of slots:

prize distribution online slots

What prizes do low, medium and high volatile slots payout?

Below we show you what prizes are paid out by all four different groups of slots.

We selected eight slots in total:

  • Two low variance slots (Blood Suckers and Starburst)
  • Two medium variance slots (Gonzo’s Quest and Thunderstruck 2)
  • Two high variance slots (book of Dead and Reactoonz)
  • Two extremely high variance slots (Jammin’Jars and Dead or Alive).

Why did we choose these slots? Simply because these belong to the most popular slots. These are a mix of old classics (slots with a long and excellent track record) and some of the newest slots, that have gained lots of popularity over the most recent years.

With Starburst, you see that prizes of 20x to 50x your total bet is paid out once 180 spins. Starburst stands out for this type of (medium-sized) prizes. Compare this to Book of Dead or Reactoonz. These slots payout this awards of this size, once every 500 and 700 spins respectively.

With Starburst or Bloodsuckers, we did not see prizes exceeding 500x the total bet. If it is paid out, it is a certainly a miracle. These are called low variance slots for a reason: a lack of massive prizes.

On the contrary, with Jammin’ Jars, an extremely volatile slot, massive prizes are much more common. For example, awards in the range of 1,000x to 2,000 the total bet, is paid out once every 20,000 spins.

You see that the prizes paid out of these four slots are the difference between day and night!

We conclude that low variance slots payout the smaller prizes more often than high variance slots.

The high variance slots, on the other hand, pay the real massive rewards more often.

How much of the total wins are paid out in small and large prizes?

Another way to look at the differences between low and high variance slots is by watching how much of the total prize money, is paid in small, medium, large or mega prizes.

The larger the share of smaller prizes (green coloured bars), the lower the variance of the slot. The larger the percentage of more massive prizes (red coloured bars), the higher the variance of the slot.

The graph below shows the differences between the eight slots.

prize distribution of slots

The low variance slots (Starburst and Blood Suckers) mainly payout smaller prizes. Around 90% of the total prize money are prizes up to 50x the total bet (the green coloured bars in the graph).

You see that for Jammin’ Jars, around 20% of the total wins are paid out in prizes of at least 500x the bet (red-coloured bars). Reactoonz and Book of Dead, these shares are around 8% and 4%, less but still substantial.  These slots are high variance for a reason!

Looking further at Jammin’ Jars, you see that “only” about half of the total wins are paid out in prizes up to 50x the bet (see green coloured bars). Compare that to the lower variance slots of Starburst and Blood Suckers.

Dead or Alive differs from the other slots, as the share of the medium-sized prizes from 50x to 500x the total bet (the blue coloured bars) is around 5% only, which is very small. This slot is extreme: it pays out a lot of smaller prizes or a massive prize, once in a while. The name for this slot could not have been chosen better!

The medium variance slots (Gonzo’s Quest and Thunderstruck 2) mainly pay out small or medium prizes (up to 500x the total bet). The share of massive prizes (of 1,000x the bet or more) is (almost) zero.

Conclusion – the mystery of the payout of slots revealed

We hope you have more of an idea about what kind of prizes the different type of slots payout. As expected, lower variance slots payout smaller prizes and high variance slots (once in a while) payout massive prizes.

The tables above hopefully give you a better feel of what you can expect. At least, no need to do thousands of spins per slot, to find out…

The pros and cons of high variance slots

Have you ever dreamt about winning a mega jackpot, when you play slots? Well, of course, you have.

Do you ever wonder when you will hit a prize of 10,000 times or even a blistering 20,000 times your total bet? Imagine: You stake $10 and get an astonishing $100,000 or even $200,000 in return…

You probably saw your favourite streamers, on YouTube or Twitch, collecting huge win after huge win. At the same time, you are wondering: “how do they do it?”

Why do they get those massive wins? And, more importantly, why aren’t you winning them?

The reason is simple. These streamers play high variance slots.

Do you want to know more about high variance slots? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these slots?

First, we describe in a bit more detail, what a high variance slot is and to try to unravel the mystery surrounding these monster payout slots.

The pros and cons of high variance slots

What is a high variance slot?

High variance slots, when it comes down to it, offer you an “all or nothing” scenario. Win massive payouts or lose your shirt in a hurry.

Players that love and play the high variance slots don’t see this as a problem. They know precisely what they are up against and accept the fact that the variance of a slot can work for them, or work against them, depending on how lucky they are that day.

A slot with high variance can payout vastly more money than one with low volatility. When playing low or medium variance slots you can, on rare occasions, maybe win up to 250 x or 1,000 x your stake.

Compare that to some high variance slots where you can receive winnings of up to 3,000 x, 5,000 x or even a mind-blowing 10,000 x your bet. Some high variance slots, such as Dead or Alive 2 and most Megaways slots, can even pay wins of 50,000 – 100,000 times your stake.

This is precisely what the high variance slot players are playing for. No messing around with all these small or medium little prizes that in the end, don’t amount to much. They want the one amazingly large payout, that record-setting prize.

High variance slots have become extremely popular in the last few years, as players seek more excitement and are triggered by the many YouTube and Twitch streamers.

advantages to playing high variance slots

How often do high variance slots pay out these massive prizes?

The table below shows how often the prizes (from low up to mega prizes) are paid out, by three top-rated and well-known high variance slots.

Jammin’ Jars is the slot with most variance. We classify this slot as an extremely high variance slot. It is because it pays out massive prizes more often. Over the longer run, Jammin’ Jars pays out a prize between 1,000x and 2,000x the total bet, once every 20,000 spins.

Don’t get surprised if, in some of these occasions, the award even tops 5,000x (once every 200,000 spins over the longer run)!

Book of Dead and Reactoonz are two popular high variance slots. Maybe they are not as extreme as Jammin’ Jars, but still highly volatile. Mega prizes (exceeding 1,000 times the total bet) are also paid out, once in a while.

Now that we have given you a sweet flavour of what high variance slots do, let’s list the pros and cons of high variance slots.

pros-and-cons-high-variance-slots

What are the pros of playing high variance slots?

As shown above, high variance slots pay out those awesome massive prizes that can make or break your session. Your odds to win a significant sum of money (for example make a profit of $10,000 or more out of a bankroll of $100) are realistic, as long as you don’t expect to win every time.

These mega prizes are one of the main advantages of playing an (extremely) high variance slot. It can happen in the next spin!

High variance slots are therefore much more exciting than your regular, run-of-the-mill low variance slot. The risks are substantial, but so are the possible wins.

You can compare high variance slots to a lottery. Lotteries are also very popular and can pay out huge prizes (although not very often).

The disadvantage of lotteries is that lotteries are organised at set times. You have to wait for days or even weeks before you know if you have won or not. With a high variance slot, you play whenever you want, and more importantly, you know immediately if you have won or not.

Online high variance slots also have a much better theoretical RTP than lotteries. The theoretical RTP is usually between 95% and 97% (on every $100 wagered, you get paid back between $95 to $97 over the longer run), which is pretty good. The Theoretical RTP of most lotteries does not even exceed 50%!

advantages of high variance slots

What are the cons of playing high variance slots?

The money needs to come from somewhere, to pay the huge prizes.

The result is that the smaller (but still substantial) prizes are paid less regularly. In particular, the awards between 20x to 200x the total bet, are not paid out so often.

It is not rare to lose your entire bankroll on a high volatility slot before you have even won one single bonus round.

High variance slots are therefore less suitable is you aim for a more modest profit. For example, if you are comfortable with a modest gain of say 5 times your initial bankroll (example: profit of $500 out of a bankroll of $100), we recommend you to play a low or medium variance slot instead.

Only if you aim for a massive win of say 50 times (or more) your bankroll, does playing a high variance slot pay off.

Conclusion – high variance slots are exciting if you aim for massive wins. The high potential comes with a risk!

Due to their nature, high risk slots are less suitable for beginning slots players and should be approached with caution.

Slot variance explained

slot variance explained

What is slot variance and why is it so important? Slot variance (also called volatility) is an indicator of how often huge (or even mega) prizes are won when playing that slot.

A slot with a high variance has more potential to pay out huge prizes than one with low volatility. When playing low or medium variance slots you can, on rare occasions, maybe win up to 100x to 500x of your bet.

Compare that to some high variance slots where you have winnings up to 3,000x, 5,000x or even a mind-blowing 10,000x your bet. Imagine having staked $10 a spin. In that case, you will win $100,000!

High variance slots, when it comes down to it, offer you an “all or nothing” scenario. Win massive payouts or lose your shirt in a hurry.

Players that love and play the high variance slots don’t see this as a problem. They know exactly what they are up against.

This is precisely what the high variance slot players are playing for. No messing around with all these small or medium little prizes that in the end, don’t amount to much.

High variance slots players are always chasing that one amazingly large payout, that record-setting prize.

High variance of a slot versus high payout rate (RTP)

Don’t make the mistake of confusing the payout rate (Theoretical Return to Player or Theoretical RTP) of a slot with the variance of said slot.

The payout rate says something about how much a slot pays back to the player, on average, over the long term.

Slot variance is an entirely different beast. The variance of a slot is an indicator of how different value payments are spread out and is an excellent indicator of the risk-factor of a slot. High variance equals high risk, and low variance means low risk.

It is easy to see why playing a slot with a high payout rate is always advantageous. If the slot has a payout rate of 97%, then, in the long run, $€ 97 out of every $€ 100 played, is returned to the player.

In summary:

  • The payout rate tells you something about how much a slot pays back to the player
  • The variance gives you information about the spread of the value of the payments
  • Low variance slots: lots of small prizes and, on occasion, a medium one
  • High variance slots: less small or medium prizes and every once in a while, a massive reward
  • Slot variance is an indicator of how risky the slot is

Comparing the variance of low variance slots against high variance slots

How high are the prizes of high and low variance slots?

So often do you hear about “low variance”, “medium variance” or “high variance” slots?

Unfortunately, explanations reach not much further than:

  • This low variance slot pays out tiny prizes only
  • This exhilarating slot rewards huge prizes
  • This slot pays mega prizes….

Are you not curious to know a bit more about the differences?

For example:

  • How often are large, huge or mega prizes paid out?
  • How big are the prizes?
  • How realistic is it, to win such an enormous prize?

We performed surveys of hundreds of thousands of real money spins on high and low variance slots, to find out more about this phenomenon.

What did we learn? Well, for starters, we learned that slot variance is not only about the maximum size of the winnings. How often these massive prizes are paid out is equally as important.

slot variance explanation

What size prizes do high variance slots payout? How often are these paid out?

Let’s start with the three high variance slots of choice: Jammin’ Jars, Book of Dead and Reactoonz.

The table below shows how often several types of prizes (from small to mega prizes) were paid out during our test runs.

slot-variance-1-prizes-of-high-variance-slots

What makes Jammin’ Jars an extremely high variance slot, is the fact that mega prizes (1,000x your total bet or more) are paid out much more often than the two other volatile slots: Book of Dead or Reactoonz.

For example, rewards of 1,000x to 2,000x the total bet are paid out once every 20,000 spins with Jammin’ Jars. For Book of Dead, it is once every 100,000 turns, and for Reactoonz it is once every 50,000 spins.

Don’t forget that very large prizes (250x to 500x the total bet) are also paid out often by Jammin’Jars: once every 5,000 spins!

Book of Dead is a high variance slot. The chances of winning mega prizes (1,000x to 10,000x the total bet) are smaller than with Jammin’ Jars, which is the main difference with Jammin’ Jars.

Book of Dead is more a high variance slot, instead of an extremely high variance slot, as these massive prizes are paid out less often.

Reactoonz is a spectacular slot! In more than half of the times (55% of the spins), you get a prize! Reactoonz is a high variance slot: it pays out huge and mega prizes, more often than Book of Dead. We have not observed prizes of 5,000x the total bet.

what is slot variance

What size prizes do low variance slots payout? How often are these paid out?

The table below shows how often several types of prizes (from small to mega prizes) are paid out for three low variance slots: Blood Suckers, Starburst and Jumanji.

slot-variance-2-prizes-of-low-variance-slots

If you play Blood Suckers, don’t expect winning anything higher than 500x your bet. Never say never, but if you do, it will be a lifetime miracle.

Blood Suckers stands out for its high Theoretical RTP, which is 98%. Bloodsuckers pays out lots of medium-sized prizes (20x to 100x the total bet).

The story for Starburst is quite similar: lots of medium-sized prizes and some significant prizes. Not so, when it comes to huge rewards, let alone mega jackpots. When we spun 5,000 times with Starburst, the maximum prize we got, did not even top 70x the total bet. How low is that?!

Jumanji has a bit more variance than the Blood Suckers and Starburst. Huge prizes occasionally hit when you play Jumanji: these are incredibly unusual though. Besides, if you hit, expect something in the range of 500x to 1,000x the total bet. Certainly not a prize of, say, 5,000x the total bet.

Jumanji has more variance than Blood Suckers or Starburst, though. Jumanji is more a medium/low variance slot.

How much of the total wins are paid out in small and large prizes?

Another way to look at the differences between low and high variance slots is by looking at how much of the total prize money, is paid in small, medium, large or mega prizes.

The graph below shows the differences between the six slots.

slot-variance-3-share-of-prizes-payout

You see that for Jammin’ Jars (around 20% of the total wins are paid out in prizes of at least 500x the bet (red-coloured bars).

For Reactoonz and Book of Dead, these shares are around 8% and 4%, less but still substantial.

Looking further at Jammin’ Jars, you see that only about half of the total prize pool is paid out in prizes up to 50x the bet (see green coloured bars). Compare that to the lower variance slots of Starburst and Blood Suckers where almost 90% of the total, is paid out in the smaller prizes (up to 50x the total bet).

When is a slot low variance and when is it considered high variance?

What makes a slot get the label of “high variance” or “low variance”?

High variance slots pay out more massive wins (of at least 1,000x the total bet) as opposed to low variance slots, where the most substantial prizes (seldom) exceed 250x the total stake, let alone higher than that.

Medium variance slots have a maximum prize of 250x to 500x the total bet. Rarely a prize above 500x the total bet.

Every slot has a different payout table. The highest variance slot (Jammin’ Jars) is so exceptional, not only because it pays out the mega prizes, but mainly because it pays these much more often than other high variance slots.

The advantages of low variance slots are that large prizes of 20x to 100x the total bet, are paid out much more often than with high variance slots. The high variance slots like to save the cash for the real massive prizes!

What does the Hit Frequency of a slot mean?

hit frequency of slots

The Hit Frequency is a term that is related to slots and is used to describe how often the slot gives a winning combination.

The Hit Frequency should not be confused with Return to Player (RTP), which describes how much money is given back to the player, calculated over millions of spins.

If a slot machine has a Hit Frequency of 8%, it means that 8 out of every 100 spins there is a winning combination.

As a rule, a slot with a low Hit Frequency will pay out fewer winning combinations but more significant prizes. If for example, a slot has a high Hit Frequency of over 25%, it will pay out more winning combinations, but they will be a lot smaller.

The Hit Frequency can also be calculated on bonus features. As most slots players will know, it is usually the bonus feature where players get the big wins — the icing on the cake, the cherry on the whipped cream.

Some slots may have a bonus hit frequency of one in every 200 spins. That would be considered a high bonus hit rate.

Other slots can have a main bonus feature that only hits once every 2,000 spins. In that case, it would be considered to be a slot with a (very) low bonus hit frequency.

Hit frequency pokie

What is better, a slot with a low or high Hit Frequency?

Although a first reaction might be to think that a slot with a high Hit Frequency is better, this is not always the case.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a slot.

If you want to play a slot that has a big top jackpot or tremendous potential in the bonus rounds, you are looking for a slot with high variance. Examples of slots with high variance are Raging Rhino, most Megaways slots and Dead or Alive 2.

These high-risk slots can have long dry spells in between the big wins, but when they pay, they can pay very well. A high variance slot typically has a low Hit Frequency, but when it pays, it pays very well.

If you are looking for slot primarily for entertainment value and decent playing time, you might feel more comfortable with a low to medium variance slot. These slots might not pay out huge prizes regularly, but they will give you lots of smaller wins and longer playing time. Examples of popular low variance slots are Wolf Gold, Starburst and Blood Suckers.

A low to medium variance slot typically has a high Hit Frequency with lots of smaller sized wins.

Another thing to take into consideration is your budget. If you have a smaller budget, playing a high variance slot will probably diminish your funds before you hit a decent win. You might want to consider playing a slot with medium variance and a pretty high hit frequency.

hit frequency explained

Always check the RTP of a slot

We strongly suggest that whatever kind of slot you choose to play to always check the return to player percentage in the game rules. If you want to have a better chance of winning on slots, you should only play slots with a Return to Player (RTP) of at least 96%, higher if possible.

Netent slots and Thunderkick slots are some of the best paying online slots, with most RTP’s around the 96.5% to 97.0% mark and some even higher.

Please be advised that every slot machine will lose you money in the long run. Slots are designed to make money for the online casino. Never play with money that you cannot afford to lose.

What are the 10 best WMS slots?

10 best WMS slots-montezuma-wms-bonus-retriggerWMS is an American casino games producer that is especially popular in land-based casinos.

wms_logoIf you’ve ever visited a brick and mortar casino near you, perhaps even a casino in Las Vegas, and played a video slot there, chances are it was a WMS slot.

WMS slots were simply head and shoulders above the rest for years. Their slots had well thought-out and equally well-executed themes, innovative bonus features and always a high entertainment factor.

In one way or another, WMS slots are almost always unique and extremely entertaining. The company is even responsible for the very first video slot with a bonus feature: the classic Reel Em In, which was released in 1996.

In recent years, WMS has lagged somewhat and is finding it more challenging to fulfil the role of the absolute trendsetter.

WMS is part of the mighty Scientific Games and releases online versions of their best-known titles under the Williams Interactive name.

These are the 10 best WMS slots

Since the release of the slot mentioned above, Reel Em In, WMS has released hundreds of video slots.

Many of these titles can be found at online casinos, although unfortunately, they haven’t transferred all of their best slots to their online platform. Case in point, we are still waiting for an online version of our favourite slot of all time: The Princess Bride.

Fortunately, many classics of WMS can be played online. Whose heart doesn’t start to beat faster with epic WMS titles like Raging Rhino, Bierhaus and Kronos?

We still regularly play the slots of WMS at a reputable online casino.

Are you ready?

These are our ten favourite WMS slots:

1. The Princess Bride

10 best WMS slots-the-princess-bride-300x169If we could make one wish come true (except for a world without war and hunger), we would opt for an online version of The Princess Bride.

This video slot, which is based on the fantastic, funny, smart, sweet and brilliant film of the same name (yes, we are fans), is unfortunately almost nowhere to be found anymore.

It has been removed from every landbased casino and can no longer be found in Las Vegas either. Believe us; we’ve searched every nook and cranny of every Las Vegas casino.

So, we have to make do with the memories. The mystery bonuses with the giant, the infamous poison cup swap bonus, the Swamp bonus with the sticky wilds and other bonus boosters.

This slot was not only a perfect example of how to design a brilliant video slot; it was also a celebration of the film.

So, WMS, we beg you: PLEASE RELEASE ONLINE VERSION OF THE PRINCESS BRIDE SLOT!

Here is a nice clip with a good cross-section of the bonus features of The Princes Bride slot machine.

2. Bier Haus

10 best WMS slots-bier-haus-review-wms-300x240Bier Haus is a hi-la-ri-ous and iconic slot from WMS, which revolves around the famous German Oktoberfest.

That means in this case: oompah music, beautiful blond and well-shaped waitresses, yodelling Gunthers and above all a lot of beer.

The free spin bonus can generate a lot of money through sticky wilds, extra wilds (the beer mugs) and frequent retriggers. Heidi! Heidi! Wunderbar!

Bier Haus was so successful that many (equally fun) sequels were released by WMS, including Bier Haus 200 and Heidi’s Bier Haus. Also, there are many clones of this slot released by other, less talented game developers.

In short: one of the nicest slots van WMS.

Check out the Bier Haus slot at Casumo.

3. Raging Rhino

10 best WMS slots-raging-rhino-beste-wms-slot-300x240Raging Rhino is what you call a real classic. This video slot has it all: super cool graphics, an equally cool free spin bonus and a high variance.

With win all ways, wild multipliers in the bonus and unlimited retriggers, Raging Rhino is a slot with which you can win an awful lot of money.

This WMS slot turned out to be so popular that in the interim dozens of clones have been produced. It shows once again what a leading role WMS has always had in the casino industry.

Check out the Raging Rhino slot at Casumo.

4. Kronos

10 best WMS slots-kronos-beste-wms-slot-300x240Kronos is probably the most famous WMS slot and certainly one of the best they have ever made.

The tough Kronos looks at you almost contemptuously and makes it clear: Don’t mess with me kid.

Luckily, this high variance top-of-the-line slot regularly gives players huge payouts with the free spin bonus.

Here, with the stacked wilds and stacked Kronos symbols, you can drag in the big prizes from both sides.

Kronos is a very volatile video slot: it can make you or break you, and of course, you have to be able to handle that.

Check out the Kronos slot at Casumo.

5. Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers

10 best WMS slots-best -slot-wms-300x240If you had to write a manual on how to make the perfect video slot, Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers might be the subject of the first chapter.

Everything about the Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers is spot on: the famous movie theme, the super design, the great bonuses and of course the heel-clicking red shoes.

Win free spins with bonus boosters, an exciting and potentially very lucrative pick and click bonus or grab a mystery prize. Of course, the well-known flying air bubbles, which contain expanding wilds, are present as well.

We have played on this slot for many hours, both online and at land-based casinos. A delightful dreamy slot, which takes you to a strange and wonderful world. The world of OZ.

Check out the Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers slot at Slots Million.

6. Montezuma

10 best WMS slots-montezuma-slot-review-wms-300x240Montezuma is also a popular slot by WMS that has already been copied by many other slot providers but has by no means been equalled.

The great strength of this beautifully designed “Aztec” slot is the unique free spin bonus, where you can earn extra multipliers up to 10 x, and unlimited retriggers with the multiplier that is active at that moment.

That is how it is possible to suddenly get 20 to 40 free spins with a 10 x multiplier.

And then your balance can ratchet up extremely fast all of a sudden.

Montezuma is a small masterpiece and fortunately gets all the praise it so deserves from players: this is one of the most played WMS slots.

Check out the Montezuma slot at Casumo.

7. Cool Jewels

10 best WMS slots-cool-jewels-best-slot-wms-300x240Cool Jewels might not be as well known as the other WMS slots on this top 10 list, but certainly one of the most fun ones.

It is a video slot that was produced with the casual game player in mind. It resembles slots like Bejeweled a lot.

You play the game on a matrix of 6 x 6 symbols, where you have to make clusters of 3 or more of the same symbols. Winning symbols disappear and make way for new ones so that you can create multiple winning combos in a row.

The more winning combinations in a row, the more the symbols are worth. There are also special symbols that can change into wilds, multipliers, bombs and even sticky wilds.

It is also possible to win free spins, where you play with even more special symbols in the game, which will bring you a lot of extra chances.

Check out the Cool Jewels slot at Casumo.

8. Heidi’s Bier Haus

10 best WMS slots-heidis-bier-haus-slot-review-wms-300x240The great success of the original Bier Haus had to lead to several sequels. WMS soon released derivative Bier Haus slots such as Heidi 200, Colossal Bier Haus and Heidi’s Bier Haus.

The latter, Heidi’s Bier Haus, is also in this top 10 of best WMS slots. We think Heidi 200 is just as good, but three Bier Haus slots in a top 10 were just a bit too much for us.

All known ingredients will be present in this slot: Heather, the smiling Gunther, wonderfully catchy singing and lots of bonus features.

This time Heidi is prominently behind the tap and lets the beer flow generously regularly, transforming entire reels into wilds.

The Heidi slots are somewhat similar to what we have with the music (and the ladies!) of ABBA: we love it, and we’re not afraid to show it to the world anymore.

Cheers!

Check out the Heidi’s Bier Haus slot at Casumo.

9. Amazon Queen

10 best WMS slots-amazon-queen-slot-300x240Amazon Queen resembles the Kronos slot in many ways: a high variance and free spins with stacked wilds and stacked premium symbols.

It is, however, a slot that can stand on its own. Amazon Queen might have been released even earlier than Kronos.

Anyway: the beautiful jungle theme has been worked out in detail, and the animation of the gorilla pounding on his chest is just superb craftsmanship of the design team of WMS. Maybe it’s weird, but we can enjoy that kind of thing.

5 things you never knew about the Book of Ra slot

Book-of-Ra-deluxe-top-5-unknown-book-of-ra-slot-factsBook of Ra is a classic slot in a league of its own, comparable with Starburst, Kronos and Bier Haus.

Book of Ra is one of those slots that every slots player knows and has played at least once in his or her life and has that instant recognizability.

The Book of Ra slot was made by Novomatic, a very big and successful Austrian software developer.

The theme of Book of Ra is Egyptian Mythology combined with an Indiana Jones-like explorer/adventure theme.

A fun theme, but nothing we haven’t seen before.

Book of Ra’s unique bonus mechanism

So what set the Book of Ra apart then? It has a unique bonus mechanism, whereby you win free spins with a special symbol. This special symbol can drop on the reels scattered. When that happens, the symbol expands and all paylines are active, regardless of where on the reels the symbols are located.

Do you have 5 scattered symbols? Then you have expanding symbols over 5 reels on your hands- a full screen with the same symbols.

And that really brings to the heart of the matter of why the Book of Ra slot is so immensely popular: you can win extraordinary amounts of money with this high variance slot.

So, it’s about time for us to look at Book of Ra a bit closer and dig around a little; perhaps a bit more than you are used to.

5 things you never knew about the Book of Ra slot

book-of-ra-novomatic-top-5-unknown-book-of-ra-slot-facts

1. Ra is the god of the sun

Ra (a.k.a. Re) was the sun god. He was one of the most revered and important gods of Egyptian mythology. Often associated with other gods such as Khepri (as morning sun) and with Atum (as evening sun).

So then what is this Book of Ra? This is a complete fabrication of Novomatic, the game provider that dreamed up Book of Ra. There is no such thing as a book of Ra, and there is no mention of it in Egyptian mythology.

We do have to admit it does sound rather cool, though.

2. Book of Ra is the most popular slot of all time in Germany.

The Book of Ra slot is without a doubt the most popular online and land-based slot in Germany. In every casino, arcade or gambling den you are almost overwhelmed with Book of Ra or one of the official other versions, such as Book of Ra Deluxe and Book of Ra 6 (with 6 reels).

3. A full screen with explorers is worth 5,000 x your total bet

In the online version of the original Book of Ra, the ultimate prize is a full screen with explorers. Book of Ra players sometimes see this as finding the Holy Grail. Your life only now has become meaningful after you succeeded in spinning 5 scattered explorers during the free spin.

These expand over all the reels, causing you to see a screen full of explorers, the highest paying symbol.

This brilliant combination is worth a mouth-watering 5,000 x your total bet per spin (based on 10 active paylines). Unfortunately, we have never been able to do it to date, but we persevere.

Maybe, one day!

4. Book of Ra is the most copied slot ever

The success of Book of Ra has led to dozens of copies of the slot by competing game providers. A small sample of Book of Ra copies: Book of Aztec and Book of Fortune (both by Amatic), Ramses Book (Gamomat) and Magic Mirror (Merkur).

All are shameless clones of the real Book of Ra slot, with the same game mechanism and the same expanding Symbols in the bonus round.

But the best known Book of Ra clone has to be Book of Dead by Play’nGo. This slot has itself become one of the most popular online slots in many online casinos. More popular even than Starburst or Jack and the Beanstalk. And that means you’re popular.

Book-of-dead-Play-n-Go-top-5-unknown-book-of-ra-slot-facts

5. Online versions of Book of Ra pay out up to 15% more

The online versions of Book of Ra pay out a lot more than the land-based versions of the same slot. It is estimated that the offline versions of Book of Ra have a payout rate somewhere between 80% and 90%. Compare that percentage with the 3 most important online versions of the Book of Ra slot:

  • Book of Ra: 94.26%
  • Book of Ra Deluxe: 95.1%
  • Book of Ra Deluxe 6: 95.06%

As you can see, Book of Ra Deluxe on average pays out the most out of these three variants. But all three online versions of Book of Ra pay out considerably more than the Book of Ra slots you will find in a slots parlour or land-based casino. That difference can be as much as 15%.

Would you like to play Book of Ra yourself?

We can imagine that after reading these five facts about the Book of Ra slot, you want to go and play it yourself.

Unfortunately Greentube, the online arm of Novomatic, no longer offers the Book of Ra slot in every country. That may change in the future, but that is the way it is now.

Of course, the closest you can get to the Book of Ra slot is with Book of Dead. That slot you play, amongst others with the online casino of Casumo.

Where can you find Book of Dead?

The Book of Dead slot is found at all reliable Play’n GO casinos. One of these Play’n GO casinos is Casumo, which is one of our favourite online casinos.

You can play the Book of Dead slot at Casumo with a 200% bonus up to $€ 50 plus 200 free spins.

What are the 10 best Megaways slots?

1 holy-diver-slot-review-bonus-chest-wilds

We can’t ignore it (nor would we want to!): Megaways slots have become extremely popular.

Megaways-Logo-BTGWhen Big Time Gaming introduced Dragonborn in early 2016, the very first Megaways slot was born. Most players were unsure what to make of it. 6 reels with changing rows of symbols (maximum 7 per reel), an almost infinite amount of ways to win (up to 117,649) and not very attractive graphics.

Dragonborn seemed more like an experiment than a successful slot and went mostly unnoticed by the general public. The two next Megaways slots: Starquest and Queen of Riches, also failed to break through. Occasionally there were some YouTube clips in circulation of players whose winnings were many thousand folds their initial bet,  but it all remained marginal.

Bonanza Megaways: the big breakthrough

The big breakthrough for Big Time Gaming came with Bonanza. A Megaways slot with a gold digger theme, two sets of reels and a Banjo tune that is as irritating as it is irresistible. Players, as curious as ever, tried out Bonanza, and this time they were hooked en masse. There was even a real Megaways craze: everyone wanted to play Bonanza and discover what the hype was about.

When Big Time Gaming then followed up by introducing the Feature Drop with slots like White Rabbit and Extra Chilli, the response was tremendous: now in one go, you could get yourself access to the coveted bonus features. Megaways slots soon became one of the most played slots in the online casinos.

Online casinos who were not yet working with Big Time Gaming, were queuing up also to add Megaways slots to their lineup.

Then in 2018, Big Time Gaming took a brilliant decision. In essence, they put their pot of gold, the complex mathematical models that make Megaways slots work, available to a select group of other providers, including Blueprint Gaming, WMS and Relax Gaming. These were allowed, for a fee to be paid to Big Time Gaming, of course, to make their own Megaways slots.

Because of this, players in 2018 were happily surprised by even more Megaways slots.

5. White Rabbit (Big Time Gaming)

Provider : Big Time Gaming
Megaways : 248,832
Payout rate : 97.39%
Feature Drop? Yes

White Rabbit Megaways is a particular Megaways slot loosely based on the fairytale Alice In Wonderland.

This high variance slot is wondrous all the way. It was the first Megaways with a so-called Bonus Drop option: the possibility to buy a bonus round in one go. Of course, that’s not without risk, but it does allow you to access the most fun part of the game right away.

It is also interesting how much money you can win on White Rabbit: there are payouts known for over 15,000 times the bet.

  • Free spins with ever-increasing reels
  • Earn extra retriggers
  • Extremely large potential
  • Wondrous theme
  • High payout percentage

4. Primal (Blueprint Gaming)

Provider : Blueprint Gaming
Megaways : 46,656
Payout rate : 96.76%
Feature Drop? No

The best Megaways slot that has been produced – up until now – by Blueprint Gaming is called Primal Megaways.

This fantastic slot has it all: a super bold prehistoric theme, mystery symbols, wilds with extra multipliers and an almost unlimited potency.

  • Win multipliers up to 243 x
  • Cross between Raging Rhino, Megaways and Jurassic Park
  • Retriggers starting from 2 scatters

A crazy slot, which you simply should try out.

3. Bonanza (Big Time Gaming)

Name : Bonanza
Provider : Big Time Gaming
Megaways : 117,649
Payout rate : 96%
Feature Drop? No

Bonanza Megaways is probably the most famous Megaways slot, and actually, it was the first real popular Megaways slot.

The setting is an abandoned gold mine, where two sets of reels do their work. On the top reel, a kind of production line with mining trolleys moves the symbols from right to left. The bottom set of reels are the classic reels: symbols fall and winning combinations make way for new ones.

In the background, a banjo tune that fits in perfectly with Bonanza sounds as irritating as it is nice. Did you know that the owner of Big Time Gaming composed and played this banjo song himself?

  • Win free spins with increasing multipliers
  • No limit on the number of free spins and multipliers
  • Win up to 50,000 x your total bet

17 Bonanza-Big-Time-Gaming-bonus-trigger-3.2

Although Bonanza is graphically rather uhm… ugly and the constant banjo sound gets on your nerves, the game is kind of irresistible. Because of the construction with the double reels and the falling symbols, no game is the same.

Seemingly small payouts can easily become monster payouts, especially if you can match the expensive symbols.

[flytonic-button text=’Play Bonanza now’ linkurl=’https://superbigwin.com/play/casumo’ size=’med’ icon=’check’ bg_color=’green’ text_color=’lgt’ ]

2. Extra Chilli (Big Time Gaming)

Name : Extra Chilli
Provider : Big Time Gaming
Megaways : 117,649
Payout rate : 96.15% – 96.82%
Feature Drop? Yes

Extra Chilli is ranking a sweet second in this top 10 of best Megaways slots.

This slot is also known as the follow-up of Bonanza, the Megaways slot that started it all.

On a visual level, there is a lot of improvement: the Feature Drop has been added, and even the payout percentage is increased.

All the more reason to try Extra Chilli:

  • Feature Drop with gamble option
  • Beautifully designed symbols: Look at those chillies!
  • Win free spins with increasing multipliers

19 Extra-Chilli-big-win-2.2

Of course, you can also win vast amounts of money with Extra Chilli; it remains, of course, a Megaways slot!

Although it is an improved version of an existing slot, Extra Chilli is one of our favourite online slots.

1.  Holy Diver (Big Time Gaming)

Name : Holy Diver
Provider : Big Time Gaming
Megaways : 586,971
Payout rate : 96.39% – 96.54%
Feature Drop? No

Just when we thought it was almost impossible to create something new around the Megaways concept, Big Time Gaming came up with a brilliant slot.

Holy Diver Megaways is a Megaways slot, integrated with the Reel Adventure concept. That is as exciting as it sounds because it makes sure that while playing, you can win all kinds of extra bonuses, wilds and stacked wilds with multipliers.

But Reel Adventure does more. Much more. It allows the player to accumulate bonus features and even multiple levels of bonus features. Won a bonus round? Then you can choose to play it, or save up for even more lucrative rewards.

  • Reel Adventure concept
  • Your loyal knight provides extra boosters and prices
  • Save for even better bonuses
  • Enormous potential: win more than 20,000 times your total bet

21 holy-diver-slot-review-big-time-gaming-1.2

The knight/adventurer theme is perfectly designed: the knight is working his butt off to help you win all kinds of extra prizes. Even during the free spins bonus, he is still trying to help you find extra free spins and more ways to win.

Speaking of ways to win, Holy Diver allows you to garner up to 586,971 Megaways. It is all about potential!

Top 10 Online High Variance Slots

1-raging-rhino-high-variance slot

Online high variance slots are a breed apart among casino games, and they target a specific and separate audience.

High variance slots, when it comes down to it, offer you an “all or nothing” scenario. Win massive payouts or lose your shirt in a hurry.

Players that love and play the high variance slots don’t see this as a problem. They know exactly what they are up against.

A slot with a high variance can payout vastly more money than one with low volatility. When playing low or medium variance slots you can, on rare occasions, maybe win up to 250 x to 500 x of your bet. Compare that to some high variance slots where you can receive winnings of up to 3,000 x, 5,000 x or even a mind-blowing 10,000 x your bet.

This is precisely what the high variance slot players are playing for. No messing around with all these small or medium little prizes that in the end don’t amount to much. They want the one amazingly large payout, that record-setting prize.

High Variance of a Slot as Opposed to High Payout Rate

Don’t make the mistake of confusing the payout rate of a slot with the variance. The former says something about how much a slot returns to the players over the long term, in the form of payouts, the latter is telling you about the short term and is an indicator of how different value payments are spread out.

It is easy to see why playing a slot with a high payout rate is always advantageous. If the slot has a payout rate of 97%, then, in the long run, $€ 97 out of every $€ 100 played, is returned to the player.

In summary:

  • The payout rate tells you something about how much a slot pays back to the player.
  • The variance gives you information about the spread of the value of the payments.
  • Low variance slots: lots of small prizes and on occasion a medium one.
  • High variance slots: few small or medium prizes and every once in a while, a very big reward.

Why Do Players Choose High Variance Slots?

Some players have a distinct preference for high variance slots. These are mostly players that enjoy taking big risks in their game.

They are prepared to lose their money faster because the trade-off is that it gives them at least a chance to get to that extremely large payout.

They acknowledge and accept that they will perhaps strike out sometimes, but that every once in a while, they will hit the home run and get their hands on the major prize.

The Top 10 Online Slots with a High Variance

We compiled a list comprised of the top 10 best online slots with a high variance. All these slots are extremely popular among players that enjoy infusing quite some risk into their game. They will agree with us that these are exciting, nerve-wracking and adrenaline-inducing slots that at any given moment can provide a monster payout.

2-book-of-dead-high-variance slot-250-x-250-Play_n_go1. Book of Dead by Play’n Go

Payout rate: 96.76%

The Book of Dead slot was released in 2016 and very quickly became the most played high variance slot in the world. This slot, which is heavily influenced by the famous Novomatic slot Book of Ra, has 10 paylines, a free spin bonus as well as wilds, that do double duty as scatters.

None of this is earthshattering. But Book of dead has a truly unnerving free spin bonus round, where a special symbol is appointed. This symbol is scattered during all free rounds, and it also expands across the entire reel.

The maximum payout in the bonus round is 50,000 x your bet per line!

3-dead-or-alive-high-variance slot-Netent2. Dead or Alive by Netent

Payout rate: 96.80%

Dead or Alive is one of the most notorious high variance slots, and it was produced by Netent.

The game has a Wild West theme and has only 9 paylines and not very many other features, except for wilds.  This makes the primary game not very exciting. Where Dead or Alive comes to life is in the bonus round. As soon as the free spin bonus is activated you immediately win 12 free spins with a multiplier of 2 x. Every wild that appears on the screen becomes sticky and will stay in place for the remainder of the free spins.

Are you able to get at least 1 wild on every reel? You are rewarded with another 5 extra free spins. Every line filled with wilds is worth 1,500 x your bet per line. Should you trigger the bonus with 5 scatters, then that number jumps to 2,500 x your total bet.

You get that Dead or Alive can pay out really big money: bonus wins of 10,000 x and even 12,000 x the total bet can occur.

[flytonic-button text=’Play Dead or Alive at Casumo with a 200% bonus up to $€50′ linkurl=’https://superbigwin.com/play/casumo’ size=’med’ icon=’check’ bg_color=’green’ text_color=’lgt’ ]

4-Immortal-romance-high-variance slot-Microgaming3. Immortal Romance by Microgaming

Payout rate: 96.86%

When Immortal Romance by Microgaming was released, players were chomping at the bit for the chance to play on this alluring slot. The game has 243 paylines and is chock-a-block with bonuses, beautifully executed graphics and an awesome soundtrack. No surprise then that Immortal Romance quickly grew to become the favourite slot of many players.

The variance of Immortal Romance is very high, and one of the main reasons is the fact that in one of the bonus features (the Wild Desire feature) all reels can become wild. When that happens, you are looking at 243 x the payout for 5 wilds, which amount to 3,645,000 coins with the maximum bet.

Other bonus features can also get you very big payouts, and that makes Immortal Romance not only a brilliant slot to look at (and listen to!), but also to play.

Immortal Romance was already released back in 2011, which makes this slot almost ancient in the online casino world, but it’s popularity remains undiminished.

Payout rate: 95.91%

Raging Rhino is without a doubt one of the most popular WMS slots, online as well as in the land-based casinos of Las Vegas.  It is a crazy cool slot, with 6 reels, 4 rows and 4,096 ways to win. As if that would not be enough, there are also stacked symbols, wilds and multipliers up to 81 x (during the free spin bonus).

3 or more scattered diamonds activate the free spin bonus and will hand you up to 50 free spins. During these free spins the tree symbol plays an important part, it is present on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5 and this symbol functions as a wild as well as a multiplier of 2 x or 3 x. If you can obtain winning combinations with multiple wilds during the bonus round, your potential payout can increase extremely fast.

2 scattered diamonds in the bonus retrigger 5 extra free spins. Raging Rhino also has Bonus Guarantee technology, just like many other slots by WMS. When you win the bonus, you are guaranteed a minimum payout of 10 x your bet.

The Wish Master is a very high variance slot by Netent with a couple of unique features.

One of them is the possibility to win an infinite number of free spins with extra features, a kind of bonus boosters. This means you can get random wilds, extra wilds, expanding wilds, multipliers and more. And the beauty is that you can retrigger the bonus with 6 free spins, whereby the features are getting stacked up as it were. When this happens, you are in a position to get your hands on extremely large payouts with the Wish Master.

This slot by Netent revolves around the “Genie in the Bottle” theme and has 20 paylines, over 5 reels and 3 rows. The minimum bet is $€ 0.20 per spin, but to get to the big bucks, you can wager up to $€120 per spin. The maximum payout is 900,000 coins, however, that requires the maximum bet to be in play.

The Wish Master can give you extremely generous payouts when you win the right stacked features, but it can also gobble up your balance in a hurry. You are forewarned; make sure you start off with plenty of coin in the bank.

8-Montezuma-high-variance slot-WMS7. Montezuma by WMS

Payout rate: 95.86%

The Montezuma online slot by WMS has an extremely intricately developed Aztec theme with the protagonist being the ruler Montezuma. The graphics in Montezuma are to die for, but that is certainly not the only thing that will draw you into playing this high variance slot with its 30 paylines.

When you activate the free spin bonus, with 3 or more scattered shields you win between 5 and 25 free spins. During each free spin, a multiplier is set somewhere betwixt 2 x and 10 x.

All gains are multiplied with this multiplier, but what is even more interesting is that you can retrigger the free spins with the same multiplier.

When you spin 2 or more scattered shields during the bonus, you obtain more extra free spins, up to a maximum of 25. The multiplier will again remain during all of these additional free spins, and there is another opportunity to retrigger again!

This way you can get dozens, nay even hundreds of free spins with a multiplier of 10 x. And this will see your winnings soar rapidly!

9-yggdrasil-casino-zeppeling-high-variance slot8. Cazino Zeppelin by Yggdrasil

Payout rate: 96.00%

We have already described the Cazino Zeppelin by Yggdrasil previously as “more than a Dead or Alive Clone”.

Despite the fact that this slot with its Victorian Steam Punk theme and fabulous graphics clearly borrowed elements from Dead or Alive, it is by no means a carbon copy.

The variance is somewhat lower, even though you can still rake in some serious dough, additionally, every wild that was on the screen the moment you triggered the bonus, immediately becomes sticky and remains in place.

The game with its 20 paylines (another major difference with that other one) has a nice flow to it, and you can win up to 20 free spins. A great high variance slot that we love to play when we are in the mood for a beautifully designed game that is entertaining and holds the promise of a very big payday. Minimum bets at Cazino Zeppelin start at $€ 0.20 per spin with a maximum limited to $€ 10. Payouts between 3,000 x to 5,000 x do occur!

10-great-blue-high-variance slot-Playtech9. Great Blue by Playtech

Payout rate: 94.25%

Great Blue by Playtech is a slot that is extremely popular, mainly in the UK, and that has everything to do with the super high variance. That Great Blue can pay out large amounts is a complete understatement- Great Blue can disburse out-of-this-world, larger than life jackpots. How so, you ask? Try this on for size; there are 25 paylines, stacked wilds, a maximum payout of 10,000 coins (with 5 wilds) and you can have multipliers up to 15 x and up to 33 free spins!!

In other words, with a healthy dose of luck and the patience required Great Blue can provide you with a fortune.

The nautical theme suits the feeling this slot emanates: lots of adorable fish, sea horses and starfish, but the real money is brought to you by the king of this ocean, the Orca.

A few more tips for beginning online casino players

The online casino world can be quite overwhelming. You have so much choice between online casinos, and how do you know which casino to trust? They all look beautiful, and they all have a lot of casino games. The good news is, most online casinos are trustworthy.

The bad news is, there are still online casinos that are not reliable. They don’t pay out promptly, or sometimes they don’t pay out at all. And there are online casinos that work with hacked and copied software. It looks like the game belongs to a respected game provider, but in reality, you are being cheated, and they pay out far less than the official version.

To help you choose a safe and reliable online casino, we have created a top 10 online casinos. In this top 10 are only casinos that we have tested ourselves with real money and have had good experiences with.

Also, don’t forget online casinos give away a casino welcome bonus to new players. In this way, a casino doubles your first deposit, and there are even gambling sites that triple your first deposit.

Which Pragmatic Play slots have the highest and lowest RTP (payout rate)?

best paying pragmatic play slots

Pragmatic Play slots have a pretty good return to player and often better than the online casino industry average for slots.

Pragmatic Play is becoming more and more visible in the gaming industry with successful slots as Wolf Gold, Mustang Gold or Release the Kraken, to name a few.

What helps is that Pragmatic play is pretty generous when it comes to the return to the player. Most of their slots pay out around 96.5%, which is just better than the average of the slots of the “market” (which we explain further below).

The illustration below shows that Pragmatic Play slots have a pretty good RTP compared to the average RTP of online slots.

RTP Pragmatic Play slots

You can see that most Pragmatic Play slots (the RTP’s of the Pragmatic Play slots are the red coloured dots) are well above the green coloured line, the average RTP of the slots, which is around 96.25%.

You can also see that most grey coloured dots (representing the RTP’s of the slots of 16 other providers) are below the red dots (representing the RTP’s of the Pragmatic Play slots).  This proves that Pragmatic Play slots score better when it comes to the payout rate.

The RTP of most Pragmatic slots are around 96.5%, which is pretty good, but not spectacular

We conclude that, if you play a Pragmatic play slot, you are not being ripped off.

Why a higher RTP matters

The higher the RTP, the better it is for you as a player. If, for example, the RTP is 96%, it implies that (in the long run), you will lose $€4 after every $€100 you have wagered. But would the RTP be 97%, you would “only” lose $€3 after every $€100 you have wagered.

You can argue that the 1% difference is not so significant. But it does matter — more than you think. You could, for example, have a balance of €100, but wager in total €500 (you play with your winnings as well).

  • If the RTP is 96%, you would expect to lose: $€500 x 4% = € 20
  • If the RTP is 97%, you would expect to lose: $€500 x 3% = € 15

You can see that the difference is already more substantial. And it becomes larger and larger, once you start to wager higher amounts.

The RTP has nothing to do with the volatility (or variance) of the slot. Variance says something about the variation of the sizes of wins. High volatility slots pay out more top prizes (but less often).

Low variance slots pay out smaller prizes, albeit it more often.

The top 10 Pragmatic Play slots with highest RTP

Below the top 10 list with Pragmatic play slots with the best Return to Player.

We have looked at all Pragmatic Play slots up to (and including) 2019. At the end of 2020, we will revise the list, if of course, Pragmatic Play has managed to release new slots with such an excellent RTP.

Name  Year  RTP
The Catfather  2016  98.10%
Gold Train  2017  97.16%
Caishen’s Gold  2017  97.08%
Pixie Wings  2017  96.67%
Mighty Kong  2016  96.64%
Dwarven Gold  2015  96.64%
Great Reef  2015  96.64%
Aladdin’s Treasure  2015  96.58%
Magic Journey  2019  96.54%
Lady Godiva  2016  96.54%

You can see the Catfather has the highest RTP of 98.1%. It is one of the highest paying slots we have seen. Gold Train also has an excellent payout rate.

Both slots have a low variance, though, so winning anything massive is very unlikely with these slots.

Pragmatic Play has over 50 slots with an RTP of around 96.5% (which are just outside the top 10 but only just), and within these slots, several have a high variance: Da Vinci’s Treasure, Peking Luck or Pirate Gold.

The 10 Pragmatic Play slots with the lowest RTP

Even though Pragmatic Play slots generally have a pretty good RTP, it is not the case for all Pragmatic Play slots.

Below is a list of Pragmatic Play slots with a poor RTP, and there are some real stinkers here, with theoretical payout rates way below par.

And yes, it is also essential to know which slots you can better avoid.

Name  Year  RTP
Tales of Egypt  2015  91.93%
7 Monkeys  2016  92.71%
Hockey League  2016  94.11%
Glorious Rome  2015  94.11%
Lucky Dragons  2016  95.19%
Santa  2017  95.92%
7 Piggies  2017  95.99%
Chilli Heat  2018  96.00%
Wolf Gold  2017  96.00%
Vegas Nights  2017  96.03%

You can see that some slots have a dramatic low RTP: Tales of Egypt with 91.93% and 7 Monkeys with 92.71%. Our advice: stay away from these slots!

It is a surprise that the immense popular slot Wolf Gold is listed here as well, with an RTP of 96.00%.  It is not that the 96% is poor, but it tells us that the Pragmatic Play slots, with the exception of the 5 worst slots above, have a pretty good RTP’s.

Conclusions – Most Pragmatic Play slots have a pretty good RTP, but not all of them

We conclude that most Pragmatic Play slots have a better RTP than the average RTP of 96.25%, which is the average RTP of 16 of the most well-known providers.

The Catfather (RTP: 98.10%),  Gold Train (RTP: 97.16%) and Caishen’s Gold (RTP: 97.08%) are the best-paying slots.
