NetEnt acquires casino software provider Red Tiger for £223m

Hot news today in the online gaming world: Swedish online game provider NetEnt announced the acquisition of fast-growing online slot supplier Red Tiger.

The deal is worth £ 200 million plus a possible additional amount of £ 23 million in 2022, depending on the realisation of future targets.

That’s what we call hitting the jackpot!

The acquisition combines two of the leading and most innovative companies in the online gaming industry. NetEnt’s vision is to create the future of gaming. With the purchase of Red Tiger, NetEnt can accelerate growth and drive further innovation to create new products that wow the customers.

For Red Tiger, the access to NetEnt’s excellent global distribution network will unlock new opportunities.

The stock market greeted this surprising news with strong enthusiasm: Netent’s stock price gained over 14%.

Who is NetEnt?

netent-logoNetEnt is a leading digital entertainment company, providing premium gaming solutions to the world’s most successful online casino operators. Since its inception in 1996, NetEnt has been a true pioneer in driving the market with thrilling games powered by a cutting-edge platform.

NetEnt is listed on NASDAQ Stockholm (NET–B) and employs around 1,000 people in Malta, Stockholm, Kiev, Krakow, Gothenburg, Gibraltar and New Jersey.

In recent years NetEnt has become one of the most popular – if not the most popular – game provider worldwide. They develop various online casino games, ranging from slots and table games to scratch games.  NetEnt’s games are consistent with very high quality, beautiful graphics, well thought out themes and innovative features.

Besides the fact that NetEnt’s games are simply a lot of fun to play, they have another great quality: they pay out well. The return to player percentage for NetEnt slots (also known as payout percentage) varies from around 96% to 98%.

Netent has made the strategic choice to release slots with a higher than average return to player. They believe that in the long run, what they lose in revenue will be compensated by player satisfaction and loyalty.

NetEnt slots like Starburst, Bloodsuckers, Jack and The Beanstalk, Dead or Alive and Jumanji are extremely popular and have all become classics.

Many players also enjoy the NetEnt’s progressive jackpot games, such as Hall of Gods, Mega Fortune and Cosmic Fortune.

You can play NetEnt games at nearly all leading online casinos worldwide, such as Casumo, Slots Million, Wishmaker and Cashmio.

Who is Red Tiger Gaming?

Red-tiger-gaming-logoEstablished in 2014, Red Tiger Gaming is a leading online supplier of casino games and software renowned for its daily jackpot games. The company has approximately 170 employees with operations in Malta, Isle of Man and Bulgaria.

Over the past five years, Red Tiger has been hugely successful in developing online slots. Gamblers love to play the games, that are well designed with a lot of mystery features and often with medium to high variance.

Popular Red Tiger games include Rainbow Jackpots, Persian Fortune, Totem Lightning and Jackpot Quest.

In collaboration with Australian slots provider Big Time Gaming, Red Tiger Gaming released its first licensed Megaways slots in 2019.

Red Tiger slots can already be played at many leading online casinos, such as Slots Million, Casumo, MrGreen and LeoVegas. Using NetEnt’s extensive network, the games can probably be played in many more casinos shortly.

Motörhead pokie release date: 22nd September 2016

Motorhead pokie live clip

Motorhead pokie releaseNetent has announced that it will release the brand new and highly anticipated Motörhead pokie on the 22nd of September, 2016.

The Motörhead pokie is the third and final instalment of the Netent Rocks trilogy, which proved to be a huge success. The first two releases of the trilogy, Guns N Roses and Jimi Hendrix, wowed players from all over the world with superb graphics, amazing soundtracks and lots of exciting bonus features.

Motörhead is a British hard rock band with eccentric and living-life-to-the-max frontman Lemmy Kilmister, who sadly passed away in 2015.

So, the Motörhead pokie has some big boots to fill and will have to answer some very important questions:

  • how loud is it? (very loud)
  • is Lemmy in it? And just how cool is Lemmy in the game? (of course, Lemmy is in the game. The guy is damn cool)
  • how are the bonus features? (great stuff)
  • how much money can you win? (114,000 coins)

Motorhead pokie release date

Now, we have had the chance to test the Motörhead pokie extensively before the release date and can already tell you that it is a scorcher of a pokie machine. It has 76 win lines and a return to player of almost 97%.

But most of all, it is loud, fast and lively, with some great bonus features:

The Bomber feature – get up to 15 mystery symbols

The Free spins feature – win 10 free spins

The Mystery reel feature – up to 5 reels of super stacked mystery symbols

It also includes live concert footage from the band and an amazing soundtrack with 4 of their biggest hits, including the one we all know and love, Ace of Spades.

We have already written an extensive review of the Motörhead pokie by Netent where you will read everything you need to know about this pokie that has all the makings of a classic. You will have to wait just a little longer to be able to play Motörhead, though.

In the meantime, why not try out the other great Netent Rocks pokies?

Sign up at All Australian Casino and you will get 100 free spins on either Guns N Roses and Jimi Hendrix + 100% bonus up to $500 as a welcome bonus. You do need to deposit at least $20 to claim the free spins.

What is the most played online slot?

Starburst most popular slot

Slots are by far the most popular online casino games. Online casino players have a long lasting love affair with slots that is not going to end any time soon.

There are several reasons why slots are so popular:

  • slots are easy to understand
  • you can win a lot of money with small stakes
  • there is lots of variety – there are thousands of different online slots

Now, some people will say that all slots are the same. Just some reels are spinning, lots of bells and whistles and in the end, you lose your money. While the last part may be correct in some instances, the thought that all slots are the same is just ludicrous.

Slots come in all shapes, sizes and themes. There are slots with 10 win lines and slots with 4,096 ways to win (or even more).

There are horror-themed slots, theme park theme slots and rock star themed slots. Megaways slots have become all the craze over the past years, featuring hundreds of thousands of possible winning combinations and mega payouts.

Some slots pay out small prizes while others can award players with multi-million dollar progressive jackpots.

You name it, and there is a slot that fits the description. There is no end to the creativity of slot software developers. And that is why there will always be new slots to discover.

What is the most played online slot in the world?

So, with all that in mind, what is the most played online slot in the world?

It is a slot that has been around for quite some time now and although it lacks the enormous possible payouts that, for instance, Megaways slots offer, it remains incredibly popular.

It’s name?

“Starburst”

Starburst is a non-progressive slot that was released by Netent in 2012. From day one, it has been hugely successful for Netent, with its enticing but straightforward gameplay, beautiful “Space-themed” graphics and signature expanding wilds feature (the Starburst symbol).

Starburst is the perfect slot for new online casino players while appealing to more seasoned gamblers as well

Although Starburst has a straightforward setup – it only has 10 win lines and no real bonus feature – it is a joy to play.

How does Starburst work?

most played pokieTen win lines pay from left to right as well as from right to left. The symbols are a mix of valuable gems as well as the traditional sevens and bars symbols. The two latter symbols are also the highest paying symbols.

But the real unique thing about Starburst is the expanding wild respin feature. Any time a Starburst symbol lands on one of the middle three reels, it expands and covers the whole reel.

To add even more excitement, the wild reel is locked, and a respin is awarded, allowing you to get even more expanding wilds on the other reels. A maximum of three respins can be won during the expanding wild feature.

The maximum amount you can win on Starburst is 50,000 coins, although its frequent wild respins and lots of smaller win make it a low variance slot by nature.

Where can I play the Starburst slot?

You can play Starburst at these reputable Netent casinos. Netent is the biggest online casino games provider in the world, which is why you can find Netent games as most online casinos, including New Zealand online casinos and United Kingdom online casinos.

Most of these online casinos will give you some extra spins on Starburst as part of their welcome bonus package – a great way to try out the Starburst slot.

6 reasons why Netent is failing miserably at the moment

6-reasons-Netent-fails-ozzy-osbourne-bonus-trigger

What’s the matter with Netent, the once so successful and influential Swedish slot provider?

netent-provider-logoThere was a time when online casinos lined up to partner with Netent, the creator of classic slots like Starburst, Dead or Alive, Jack and the Beanstalk, Twin Spin and Gonzo’s Quest.

And this is only a small sum-up of a vast list of their most successful slots.

How about Guns N’ Roses, The Invisible Man, Creature From The Black Lagoon and Piggy Riches?

These are quality slots, too, with well-executed themes, exciting bonus rounds, and entertaining gameplay.

The exciting feeling a new Netent slot used to evoke, has slowly disappeared.

If a new Netent slot used to be released, we couldn’t wait and were full of eager anticipation. The alarm clock was set, we deposited $€ 50 or $€ 100 at our favourite online casino, and with a nice cup of hot coffee, we settled in our seat to give the Netent slot that was about to premiere, a run for its money.

As soon as that characteristic green Netent logo appeared on the screen, we knew we were about to play something extraordinary.

The thrill, the build-up of excitement, it’s all gone.

Netent has slipped from a top-tier market leader to a somewhat dull mid-tier player. Not even in terms of turnover – Netent is still one of the largest providers – but in terms of relevance.

They are no longer determining the direction and new developments of the slot games industry

6-reasons-Netent-fails-Jack-and-the-beanstalk-netent-slot-review

It’s been a long time since Netent released a blockbuster like Jack and the Beanstalk.

Netent’s share price has been free-falling for years

Netent’s market share is declining, and its financial results are also disappointing. This can happen once in a while, but not year after year.

Whereas in the past Netent slots always dominated the online casino lobbies, we see more and more slots from other providers — a telltale of demise.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-netent-faalt-share-price

Netent gets severely penalized by investors for their poor performance. Netent’s share price reached its absolute peak in June of 2016 and was worth just over 91 Swedish Kronor (± $€ 10.92).

On 3 January 2020, the value of Netent shares fell to a very modest 26.1 Swedish kronor (± $€ 2.87). A decline of more than 71%, in just three and a half years.

Netent has always been the “Golden Boy” of the online casino industry but has lost that honorary title.

In 2018 Netent’s Board of Directors intervened hard and sent CEO Per Eriksson home. He was replaced by the former Netent CFO, Therese Hilman.

To date, this significant decision seems to have had little to no effect: Netent’s performance has only deteriorated since the replacement at the top.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-gold-money-frog-netent-slot-review

Slots like Gold Money Frog are nothing more than dull “Oriental” remakes of existing Netent titles.

Why is Netent failing so hard?

Netent has had a tough time last couple of years. They have lost a large part of their competitive edge, and market leadership and the companies share value is shrinking noticeably.

How did this happen? What crucial mistakes did Net Entertainment, Netent’s full name, make?

And how does Netent get back on its feet?

1. They focus more on quantity than quality

CEO Therese Hilman announced it at the beginning of 2019: Netent is going to release a lot more slots. The more slots, the more visibility in the online casinos and the more players will choose for Netent games, was the plan.

A simple strategy, you would think. The consequence, however, of Netent releasing a lot more slots in 2019 than we were used to, was an appalling quality of these titles.

Netent released two excellent slots in 2019: Reel Rush 2 and Dead or Alive 2. Indeed, both sequels. That indicates a lack of creativity.

Many of the other releases were Asian versions of famous slots like Twin Spin and Cosmic Fortune. Okay, for the Oriental market, but no use for North American and European markets.

Netent should have focused on developing unique, innovative and eye-catching slots instead of releasing endless spin-offs of old titles.

Even the Ozzy Osbourne slot, which should have been the hit of 2019, we qualified: “Nice, but no blockbuster.” When Netent uses such an iconic rock star as the theme, you have to go for it full throttle; third gear does not cut it.

2. There is too much competition from smaller, eager slot providers

Smaller companies usually much better-motivated employees than large companies. It is easier to get to the top than to sustain your market leadership. And young slot providers don’t feel shareholders breathing down their necks, yet.

So they dare to take risks much quicker. A new Netent slot has to be a success. Developers of a Push Gaming or Nolimit City slot, for example, do not feel that obligation. For them, it is a nice bonus if their slot performs more than okay. No pressure, that’s how most beautiful creations can arise, think of like slots like Jammin’ Jars and Pixies versus Pirates.

3. Players spend less money in their largest markets

Given their Scandinavian roots, Netent has always been enormously popular in countries such as Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Also, in English-speaking parts of the world, such as Australia and the United Kingdom, Netent slots were played a lot.

Mainly the strict regulation of the Swedish and UK markets and the mandatory withdrawal from the (very lucrative) Australian market have hurt Netent a lot.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-netent-fail-live-casino

In the lobby of the live casino, Netent games can hardly be found.

4. Their live casino games are no match to those of Evolution Gaming

Although Netent is best known for its online slots, they also have a big branch with live casino games: Netent Live.

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week Netent Live offers players the opportunity to play on live roulette, live blackjack and live baccarat. The quality of Netent Live’s games is certainly not bad, but are sub-par to the games of Evolution Gaming.

Again, we see that Netent is less able to innovate and amaze than its big competitor. With Netent Live, you won’t find any traffic-builders like Lightning Roulette and Monopoly Live.

5. Many of their best people started their own company or have been head-hunted by the competition.

It’s a bit like the effect successful national football/soccer clubs suffer from in the European Champions League: if you perform well in the Champions League, you’ll lose all your best players the next season.

Many of Netent’s most talented designers and creative minds became slot developers themselves and started their own successful businesses.

For example, two former Netent employees founded Quickspin. And there are countless other examples.

6. They are too distracted by other matters than making kick-ass slots

Instead of focusing on doing what they were always the best at, making market-leading slots, Netent is sometimes veering off course into a completely different direction.

For example, Netent began to act as an affiliate platform. Netent thinks visitors of their website not only want to try out their games but also want to gamble for real money afterwards.

By redirecting these players to an online casino, they earn a few extra bucks.

There’s nothing wrong with affiliate marketing, and of course, Netent is free to do what they like and to set up their website in any shape or form, but to us, it still comes across as a bit desperate and cheap.

Netent is a slots provider, not a casino portal, and they need to reflect that.

6-reasons-Netent-fails-wings-of-riches-slot-netent-review

Wings of Riches is a perfect example of a very poor, generic, Netent slot.

Is there still hope for Netent?

Can Netent still be saved? Of course, they can.

No other slot provider can draw on so much experience, know-how and contacts and such a broad portfolio of slots and casino games.

However, Netent needs to shift its focus and reinvent itself. Less conventional slots or clones of existing slots and more unique, original slots, with that classic Netent feeling.

Make sure you come up with something that no one has ever seen before – a new Megaways or a Lightning Roulette, something of that magnitude.

Then maybe it will all work out after all.

The evolution of maximum wins on Netent slots throughout the years

max wins on netent slots

Netent has released over 100 slots over the past decade. We thought it was about time to have a closer look at the maximum win of all these slots.

Especially after the release of Dead or Alive 2, where the maximum win tops a surreal 100,000x (100 thousand times!)  the bet.

One question that comes into our mind is whether Netent has decided to make the slots more volatile or not. Has Netent tried to keep up with the competition, which has also released more volatile slots since 2018?

We will go into this in a minute.

First, let’s briefly explain the phenomena of maximum wins.

What does the maximum win of a slot tell you exactly?

The maximum win (its all in the name) tells you what you can win if you get all the luck in the world. If the maximum win, for example, equals 1000x the bet, and you do a spin of $€10, the maximum amount you can win is a high $€10 thousand.

Yes, you are (almost entirely) right if you say that if the maximum win is higher than the slot variance (volatility) is higher. It is right in most of the cases, but not all cases.

Netent’s slot Pyramid, for example, has a maximum win of a staggering 36,000x the bet. But Netent qualifies this as a “medium to low variance” slot. It must imply that chances of getting such a maximum win are incredibly small (maybe once in very billion spins). Most top prizes of Pyramid will, therefore, not even top 500x the bet.

Another Netent slot, Joker Pro, has a maximum win of 1,000x the bet. It is much smaller, but the key difference is that this maximum prize is won much more often (around once every 50 thousand spins). It makes Joker Pro, according to Netent, a “high variance” slot.

So, yes, the maximum win is an excellent indicator of the slot variance, but there are exceptions. But in the case of, for example, Starburst, the maximum win is “only” 500x the bet. And this slot has, indeed, a low variance.

The maximum win can be, in some cases, a bit misleading. Many slots provide an enormous high maximum win (and also has the function of a cap), but at the same time, chances of actually getting this win are so incredibly small, that it does not say much.

max wins on netent slots

The maximum win of Netent slots

Now let’s go to the real deal.

Below is an overview of the maximum win of Netent slots by year of release.

max win of netent slots

For presentation reasons, we have capped the maximum win at 20,000x the bet.
For about 60% of all Netent slots, were we able to find out what the maximum win is. Usually, it is expressed in Coins. In 40% of the cases, unfortunately, Netent has not revealed what the maximum win is.

Netent is very open when it comes to the variance of slots, but not always so when it comes to the maximum win. Nevertheless, we managed to find out the maximum win of 80 Netent slots. For the slots Dead or Alive and Who’s the Bride?, it is not revealed by Netent what the maximum win is. We have estimated it to be over 10,000x the bet. For all other slots on this graph, it is disclosed by Netent.

It is interesting to see that Netent has decided to increase the maximum win of slots in 2018/2019. If you look closely, you see that slots released in the years 2012-2016 pretty much all had a maximum win below 2,000x the bet.

Exceptions were Dead or Alive, Mega Fortune Dreams (21000x the bet) and Pyramid (36,000x the bet).

But in 2019 alone, there were quite a few slots with a much higher maximum win, than what we have witnessed before: Ozzy Osbourne (maximum win of 10,000x the bet), Santa vs Rudolf (10,000x the bet), Who’s the Bride? (10,000x the bet) and of course Dead or Alive 2, with a maximum bet topping a surreal 100,000x the bet.

Also, you can see that more and more slots have a maximum win of 5,000x the bet. This was, except for Dead or Alive, not seen before.

Below is the average maximum win of Netent slots by release year.

max win netent slots by release year

Which Netent slots have the highest maximum win?

In the list below, you see the Netent slots with the highest maximum wins. We considered all slots up to and including 2019 (of which Netent provides the maximum win).

As you can see, most of the slots with a high maximum win, are relatively new. Of the top 10 slots (when it comes to the highest maximum win), half of them were released in 2019.

Could 2020 be an even better year for high maximum win Netent slots?

Why has Netent decided to increase the maximum win of slots in 2019?

It is clear that Netent has changed the mathematics of the slots and decided to increase the variance of slots.

Many players nowadays, fed by the slot streamers, are more and more interested in high variance slots. The idea of bagging a life-changing win is very appealing and is a guarantee for likes, shares and views on youtube, twitch and other streaming media.

Put in simple words: those players prefer slot with a maximum win of 10,000x the bet over slots with “just” a maximum win of 500x the bet.

Which Netent Slots have the highest and worst Return to Player?

Netent Slots with highest theoretical RTP and worst theoretical RTP

Netent has always had a reputation for creating online slots with a high Return to Player.

Netent, one of the top online slot providers, is well known for delivering slots with a better theoretical Return to Player (RTP) than most of the other providers.

Yes, you can say that Netent slots are lacking innovation lately. You can argue that their slots are lacking volatility, but you cannot disagree with the fact that most of their slots have a pretty good RTP.

Especially compared to other providers.

Why a higher Return to Player matters

The higher the RTP, the better it is for you as a player. If, for example, the RTP is 96%, it implies that (in the long run), you will lose $€4 after every $€100 you have wagered. But is the RTP would be 97%, you would “only” lose $€3 for every $€100 you have wagered.

You can argue that the 1% difference is not so significant. But it does matter — more than you think. You could, for example, have a balance of €100, but wager in total €500 (you play with your winnings as well).

  • If the RTP is 96%, you would expect to lose: $€500 x 4% = € 20
  • If the RTP is 97%, you would expect to lose: $€500 x 3% = € 15

You can see that the difference is already more substantial. And it becomes larger and larger, once you start to wager higher amounts.

The RTP has nothing to do with the volatility (or variance) of the slot. Variance says something about the variation of the sizes of wins.

High volatility slots pay out more top prizes (but less often).

Low variance slots pay out smaller prizes but do so more often.

Below the top 30 list with slots with an excellent (or high) RTP. We have looked at all Netent slots up to (and including) 2019.

At the end of 2020, we will revise the list, if of course, Netent has managed to release new slots with such an excellent RTP.

The best-paying Netent slot is Mega Joker, with a theoretical RTP of 99%!

That is, of course, exceptional, and the RTP can only reach 99% if you play according to a certain way. It is a pretty old slot and not up to the 2019/2020 standards we expect from slots nowadays.

Other slots that are worthwhile mentioning are Blood Suckers (RTP of 98.00%), Guns N’ Roses (RTP of 96.98%), Reel Rush (RTP of 96.96%), Jack Hammer (96.96%), Dead Or Alive 2 96.82%) and Dead Or Alive (96.82%).

You can see that even immense popular slots are on the list, as well as slots with extreme volatility such as the Dead or Alive slots.

worst paying netent slots

The 20 Netent slots with the lowest RTP

Even though Netent slots generally have a pretty good Return to Player, it is not the case for all Netent slots.

Below is a list of Netent slots with a poor RTP, and there are some real stinkers on there, with theoretical payout rates that are not up to par.

We have looked at all Netent slots up to (and including) 2019.

And yes, it is also good to know which slots you can better avoid.

Rank Name Year  RTP
1 Super Lucky Frog 2011  92.90%
2 Jackpot 6000 2011  95.00%
3 Excalibur 2011  95.08%
4 Ghost Pirates 2013  95.28%
5 Hall of Gods 2010  95.30%
6 Arabian Nights 2009  95.62%
7 The Reel Steal 2011  95.90%
8 Mega Fortune Dreams 2014  95.90%
9 Strolling Staxx 2019  95.95%
10 Gonzo’s Quest 2011  95.97%
11 Spellcast 2011  95.98%
12 Koi Princess 2015  96.00%
13 Mega Fortune 2009  96.00%
14 Wild-O-Tron 3000 2018  96.01%
15 Elements 2012  96.02%
16 Temple of Nudges 2019  96.03%
17 Vikings 2018  96.05
18 Archangels: Salvation 2018  96.08%
19 Starburst 2012  96.09%
20 Finn’s Golden Tavern 2019  96.10%

You can see that most (but not all) of the slots on this list are either “very old” and released in the earlier years OR are pretty unknown. And several slots did not become well known, simply because of the low RTP.

But you can also see that 2 of the most popular slots (certainly top 5 Netent slots of all time) are on this list as well: Starburst and Gonzo’s Quest.

RTP Netent slots

Why are there so many differences in the RTP of slots?

Netent tends to have a pretty considerable variation in the RTP. Why do these vary so much? It is not crystal clear why there are differences, but the main reasons we can think of are:

  • Generally, Netent needs to make a margin on slots. If they would “only” provide slots with a high RTP, the margin would not be high enough on a total level
  • Sometimes, players are not aware that there are so many differences and play a slot, as long as the RTP is at least 96%.
  • Providers try and see how far they can go with lowering RTP’s. If players accept slots with a lower RTP, why not trying?
  • Netent sometimes needs to make a considerable investment, in particular, for very attractive slots (think of slots as Vikings or Planet of the Apes). These are slots with enormous investments, that need to be earned back
  • Pressures from competitors differ over time. If there is more competition, it could imply that the RTP os slots improve. We do, however, see that the RTP of several providers has worsened throughout 2019. So if more providers lower the RTP’s, Netent has more “room” to do the same. And for several slots they have.

The picture below shows the development of the RTP of all netent slots from 2012 till the end of 2019.

You can see that almost all slots have an RTP between 96% and 97%. But also that more slots released in 2018 and 2019 are closer to the “lower” 96% than was the case for slot released in the years from 2015 to 2017.

And indeed, more providers are releasing slots with a lower RTP.

Conclusions – Most Netent slots have a pretty good RTP, but not all of them

We conclude that Netent slots generally have a better RTP than most other providers. But there are substantial differences, and you should always check the RTP of a slot before you start playing.

There is no need to play slots with a poor RTP (96%) if there are plenty of slots with high RTP (or close to 97%).

You don’t have to throw away money out of the window if there is no need to do so!
