The Return To Player is a way of expressing how much of the total stakes will be paid back on average to the player, calculated over millions of spins. The higher the RTP, the better it is for you as a player.

At first glance, you see that NetEnt slots score above the industry average when it comes to payout rates. Below I’ve plotted the RTP of all NetEnt slots for the 2012-2019 period.

You see that RTP of most NetEnt slots (the red coloured dots) are well above the green coloured line, the average RTP of the slots, which is around 96.25%.

You also see that most grey coloured dots (the RTP’s of the slots of 16 other providers) are below the red dots.  It confirms that NetEnt slots score better when it comes to the payout rate.

I conclude that if you play a NetEnt slot, you are, in most cases, not giving too much away.

Why a higher RTP matters

The higher the RTP, the better it is for you as a player. If, for example, the RTP is 96%,  you can expect to lose $€4 after every $€100 you stake (in the longer run). But would the RTP be 97%, you would “only” lose $€3 after every $€100 staked.

You may think that the 1% difference is not so significant. But it matters — perhaps even more than you think.

For example, your starting balance is €100, but you stake €500 in total (as you also stake your winnings).

• If the RTP is 96%, your expected losses are: $€500 x 4% = € 20
• If the RTP is 97%, your expected losses are: $€500 x 3% = € 15
