Breaking: This is what Circa, the brand new casino in Downtown Las Vegas will look like!

On January 11, 2019, the Stevens brothers, owners of the D Hotel and Golden Gate Hotel in Las Vegas, announced the name of their new casino and hotel on Fremont Street.

The name: Circa. It may take some getting used to, but it will surely grow on you. It sounds festive and slightly chic.

Circa is the biggest project so far of the very successful Stevens brothers (Derek and Greg), who were born in Belgium and grew up in Detroit (hence the name D Hotel).

The plan is to open this brand new hotel and casino complex by the end of 2020. It will be built on the corner of Fremont and Main Street, diagonally across from the Plaza Hotel.

The sad and deteriorated Las Vegas Club Casino was completely neglected and in the end looked more like a deserted cemetery than a vibrant casino.

Also, the adjacent businesses, the small party casino Mermaids and the Stripclub Glitter Gulch did not really contribute to the appeal of Downtown Las Vegas.

A great opportunity for the Stevens brothers

When it became clear that Las Vegas Club was for sale, the Stevens brothers seized the opportunity.

They bought the hotel and its grounds at a bargain price. It was not the Las Vegas Club casino that the Stevens brothers were interested in, but the location.

The Las Vegas Club was immediately closed and a major renovation was briefly considered.

Soon, however, these plans changed, also Mermaids and Glitter Gulch were bought. This created the freedom for the brothers to first demolish the existing buildings to ground level, and then build a completely new hotel from the ground up.

Circa, the game changer of Downtown Las Vegas

Downtown Vegas is becoming increasingly popular among visitors to Sin City. The atmosphere is much friendlier than on the Strip, the alcohol is cheaper and there is often free music and entertainment.

One problem, however, is that the Downtown hotels, despite all their history and charm, are clearly less luxurious and lavish hotels on the Las Vegas Strip.

Another problem: Downtown there are no decent swimming pools to be found, except for maybe the pools in the Golden Nugget and the Downtown Grand Hotel.

For the young and rich hipsters from California, a good pool scene has become a basic necessity. Without an excellent pool, these customers will stay elsewhere.

Circa will solve both problems. It will be a modern, beautiful hotel with all modern conveniences, while still providing the value for money, that Downtown hotels are known for.

The most beautiful swimming pool in Vegas?

The pool of Circa will be so beautiful and awe-inspiring that it can easily compete with any hotel on the Strip.

From their mini pools or private cabanas, visitors can marvel at the mega-screens at the back of the spacious pool.

There is even a name for this phenomenon: a multi-tiered pool amphitheatre.

Of course, a DJ will be present and there are plenty of bars and eateries.

Whether there will be a Swim Up blackjack, remains to be seen.

Almost 800 rooms and a modern casino

A total of 777 rooms and suites are planned at the Circa Hotel, in the tallest hotel building in Downtown Vegas.

There will also be several world-class restaurants, and the outdoor bar will be Vegas’ longest bar.

The casino will look beautiful: modern, light and spacious, with high ceilings. If you didn’t know any better, you would imagine being in the Aria Hotel or the Cosmopolitan Hotel. All your favourite casino games can be found at Circa Casino.

In addition to hundreds of the latest video and mechanical slots, Circa’s casino will accommodate dozens of table games.

You will be able to play your favourite roulette strategy, blackjack and baccarat, as well as the wonderful dice game Craps.

Ultramodern sportsbook

Co-owner Derek Stevens is an avid sports bettor (each year he places at least one sports bet with a possible payout of $1 million at one of his competing casinos).

This bet with a potentially massive payout is then extensively shared through all social media channels, generating lots of extra publicity for his casinos.

Anyone who has ever planned a Las Vegas trip knows how difficult it is to choose the perfect hotel for your needs.

Nowhere else in the world can you sleep for relatively little money in such beautiful hotels as in wonderful Sin City.

But still: which hotel is the best? Which hotel is the pinnacle of class, style and Vegasy goodness? There are so many good choices that often, you can’t see the forest for the trees.

That’s why we’ve put together a top 10 of the swankiest Las Vegas hotels. Most of them are on the famous strip, but there are also some gems to be found Off-Strip and in Downtown Las Vegas.

Of course, it is also true in Vegas that there is a price tag attached to everything, and that also goes for quality. As an indication, we have rated how pricey the hotel is compared to other hotels in Las Vegas. A common mistake of Las Vegas (newbie) visitors is to try to spend the night as cheaply as possible, which often results in staying in a mediocre hotel in a poor location.

Why not indulge yourself to the max and choose a top-notch hotel in Las Vegas?

1. Wynn

Number of rooms: 2,716

How big is the casino? 110,000 sq ft / 10,200 m²

Price level: $$$$$

Good to know: strollers are barred from the hotel unless you are a guest.

Wynn is a 5-star hotel on the north side of the Las Vegas Strip. The Wynn hotel was opened in 2005, and the sister Encore followed in 2008, with another 2,034 rooms. The service level in both locations is unrivalled and the hotels, stylish as they are, are permanently in a perfect state of maintenance.

Good to know: the cocktails at the casino, which is one best run casinos in the United States, are out of this world and are served by the finest-looking waitresses in Vegas.

2. Cosmopolitan

Number of rooms: 2,995, divided over two towers.

How big is the casino? 75,000 sq ft / 7,000 m²

Price level: $$$$$

Good to know: if you take a room in the hotel, choose a terrace view room. Ask for a room on the 35th floor or higher, for an unobstructed view of those fantastic fountains.

The Cosmopolitan was opened in 2010, during the credit crunch, economically the least profitable period in Las Vegas in recent decades. At that time, the brand new hotel was forced to market the beautiful rooms at rock-bottom prices – anything to survive.

Despite this initial setback, the incredibly hip and trendy hotel-casino soon managed to steal the hearts of tourists. The beautiful architecture and the rooms with balconies and views of the Bellagio fountains – a unique feature on the Las Vegas strip, saw to that.

Must see: the Chandelier bar, with a fan of tens of thousands of crystals and three different levels. Not to be missed: the Wicked Spoon Buffet, together with the Bacchanal Buffet in Caesar’s Palace, is the very best Las Vegas has to offer in the “All you can eat” category.

3. Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas

Number of rooms: 392

How big is the casino? The Waldorf Astoria hotel has no casino (Aria Casino is within walking distance)

Price level: $$$$$

The 47-storey Waldorf Astoria Hotel is part of City Center and has 392 rooms. Remarkable: the hotel’s beautiful lobby is located on the 23rd floor. Waldorf Astoria focuses on the top segment of visitors and has a level of service that other hotels can only dream of.

We were lucky enough to stay a few nights at the Waldorf Astoria, and although the hotel staff is never pushy, they will do anything within their power to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

The American Automobile Association has awarded the hotel five stars, and that seems more than fair to us.

The rooms are fully equipped, and the beds are heavenly. This hotel has no casino but is located right on the Strip – the Aria, Cosmopolitan and Planet Hollywood are all within walking distance.

However, there is an excellent cocktail lounge with breathtaking views of the Strip, and there is the restaurant of world-class French chef Pierre Gagnaire: Twist. The hotel also has a serene swimming pool, a gym and a beauty salon.

4. Aria Resort & Casino

Number of rooms: 4,572

How big is the casino? 151,000 sq ft / 14,000 m²

Price level: $$$$

Aria Resort & Casino is the epicentre of the megalomaniac City Centre project, which consists of a collection of hotels, condominium towers and conference centres. The billions devoured by the project (City Centre costs over $€ 9 (!) billion) almost meant the bankruptcy of the MGM group. Aria is a beautiful spacious hotel with modern architecture and luxurious finishing.

Aria’s nightlife is of such a high standard that you may never feel the need to leave the hotel.

From Jewel Night Club and several star restaurants to the huge 151,000-square-feet/14,000-square-metre casino, the huge sportsbook and the many state-of-the-art casino games, boredom is not an option at Aria.

5. Venetian

Number of rooms: 4,049

How big is the casino? 119,000 sq ft / 11,000 m²

Price level: $$$$$

Nice to know: electric motors power the Gondolas and some gondoliers can belt out a real Italian serenade. At a surcharge, of course. This is Las Vegas after all.

If there is one hotel-casino that signifies everything Las Vegas is famous for, it is The Venetian. Built at a time hotels on the Strip still had themes, this miniature Venice is a must-see for every visitor to this beautiful city.

The resort first opened its doors in May 1999, when the beautiful Italian beauty Sophia Loren took the ceremonial first ride in one of the brand new gondolas.

This resort, full of references to the real Venice, cost $1.5 billion – an unprecedented amount at the time. In addition to endless photogenic spots and shopping, The Venetian also offers an insane selection of restaurants and bars. In total, you can choose from no less than 42 different bars, casual eateries, 24-hour coffee shops and starred restaurants.

The only thing the Venetian doesn’t have? A buffet.

6. Bellagio

Number of rooms: 3,950

How big is the casino? 116,300 sq ft / 10,800 m²

Fun to know: more than 5,000 lamps and 1,200 water nozzles are used in every performance of the famous “Fountains of Bellagio” show.

Price level: $$$ – $$$$

The Bellagio hotel was opened in 1998 on the Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The hotel-casino, which was modelled after a rustic Italian coastal village, is built on the old site of the Dunes Hotel. Steve Wynn was the driving force behind The Bellagio, and this Las Vegas visionary went on to build the Wynn Hotel with the money he received from MGM Resorts when he sold them The Bellagio.

Famous and not to be missed is the musical fountain show in the lake in front of the hotel. Also worth a visit is The Conservatory, a changing flower show near the lobby of the hotel. The world-famous glass ceiling in the lobby and the restaurants overlooking the fountains make this hotel even more unique.

7. Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa (Off Strip)

Number of rooms: 815

How big is the casino? 118,300 sq ft / 10.991 m²

Price level: $$$

Red Rock Casino is a modern, somewhat smaller hotel that opened in 2006 as the showpiece of the Station Casinos group – several successful local’s casinos, where locals go to gamble and unwind.

Although the number of rooms is limited to just over 800, the casino is immense. Red Rock Station has a beautiful pool, soft pastel shades and a chic, almost Strip-like look. Red Rock Hotel and Casino Resort is one of our favourite places to visit, and maybe even to spend the night.

8. Mandalay Bay

Number of rooms: 3,309

How big is the casino? 134,500 sq ft / 12,500 m²

Price level: $$$

Good to know: Mandalay Bay is an excellent hotel and casino, but it’s not that well located on the south side of Strip – you’re just a little further away from the action.

Mandalay Bay was opened in 1999 and is owned by the MGM Resorts International Group. The striking gold-coloured hotel-casino is the first thing you’ll see when you enter the city of Las Vegas coming from California and, for that reason alone, will give many people a warm feeling. Part of the hotel is run by the Four Seasons Hotel, a chain that geared towards the wealthy, demanding visitor.

But Mandalay Bay has a lot more than just a gilt edge. The pool complex, complete with beach and wave pool, is perhaps the most beautiful of Las Vegas. Do you want to see a fantastic Cirque de Soleil show with crazy music? Then visit the “One” show – the ultimate homage to Michael Jackson.

You can eat and drink in one of the many top restaurants and bars, including two excellent steakhouses: Charlie Palmer Steak (in the Four Seasons) and Stripsteak.

Super tip: order a signature cocktail in the Skyfall Lounge and enjoy the most beautiful view of the Las Vegas Strip.

9. M Resort (Off Strip)

Number of rooms: 390

How big is the casino? 91,500 sq ft / 8,500 m²

Price level: $$$

The boutique hotel-casino M Resort was opened in 2009 and is located on the I-15 South, about a 20-minute drive from the Las Vegas strip. It is a beautifully modern and small-scale hotel, which is ideally suited to help you recover from jet lag in the first few days.

Still, you will bathe in the luxury that you are accustomed to from a Strip Hotel.

The crisp, 91,500 sq ft / 8,500 sq m, M Resort casino looks beautiful, with beige, orange and brown colours and striking, narrow hanging lamps. It offers thousands of the latest slots and table games that will impress even the most seasoned gambler.

The M Resort buffet is also very popular with locals and tourists alike.

10. Golden Nugget (Downtown)

Number of rooms: 2,419

How big is the casino? 37,700 sq ft / 3,500 m²

Price level: $$ – $$$

The Golden Nugget is the eye-catcher of Downtown Las Vegas and the only hotel on Fremont Street that can compete with the hotels on the Strip in terms of luxury, facilities and restaurants. Although the casino is on the small side compared to other Vegas casinos, every square inch is optimally utilised, always creating a crowded and lively atmosphere.

The Rush Tower offers the most beautiful and newest rooms of the nearly 2,500 rooms that The Golden Nugget has to offer.

The Golden Nugget pool is the only one in Las Vegas with a “Shark Tank” – the slide takes you in a tube that leads through an immense Shark Tank, full of sharks and other big fish. A beautiful sight.

Why isn’t Caesar’s Palace on this list?

We have chosen to look a bit further than the Strip. Las Vegas Boulevard has a lot to offer, but there are plenty of gems off the Strip that are just as worthy of our attention.

One reason we like Las Vegas so much, it is continually reinventing itself. A little precursor of good things to come and possibly a future runner up to this list: Circa is coming to (down) town!

Las Vegas is very much alive and is always buzzing and renewing itself. Nowhere else will you find such an exciting mix of the best entertainment, beautiful mega-resorts, magical neon and immensely large casinos.

Our top 10 of Las Vegas must-do’s

For everyone who is about to visit Las Vegas, or has plans to do so, we have put together a top 10 of must-do things.

And no matter how overwhelming all the impressions in this magnificent city are, these ten things will make your trip unforgettable.

10. Spend the night in a mega-resort on the Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) is the heart of Las Vegas – this is where it all happens. The Strip is a wide street with a length of almost 4.3 miles / 7 kilometres, with gigantic Hotel-Casino Resorts on both sides.

Las Vegas Boulevard is home to 29 of these Mega Resorts, which can have as many as 5,500 rooms and are equipped with all modern conveniences: swimming pools, entertainment, casinos and restaurants.

The most luxurious Mega Resorts are Wynn, Encore, Venetian, Aria and Cosmopolitan. Superb hotels with lavish, ultra-luxurious rooms and the very best service.

Other iconic hotels include Belaggio (with its world-famous fountains), MGM Grand (the largest hotel on the Strip), Paris (complete with an Eiffel tower at exactly 1/3 scale) and the Luxor, with its Pyramid shape.

9. Take a long walk on the Strip and take in the sights

One of the best things to do in Las Vegas is an afternoon of strolling around on the Strip and just enjoying everything around you. The hotels, the abundance, the madness and the people. What a great way to spend the day! You will discover new things over and over again.

Starting with: “Look, the fountains are starting” and “The Mirage Volcano is about to erupt” to “Did an Elvis with a bride really just walk by?” and “Come, let’s have a cocktail of 2 feet (over 1/2 a meter) in height in the shape of the Stratosphere Tower”.

8. View the Belaggio Fountains

For many years, the Belaggio Hotel was the most beautiful hotel in Las Vegas. Its gorgeous fountain show, which can be seen several times a day, is a unique and quintessential Vegas experience. The dancing fountains, accompanied by the beautiful sounds of Andrea’s Bocelli’s “Time to Say Goodbye” are a sight to behold.

Enjoy the small explosions that push the water tens of feet/metres into the sky and try not to cry with the beautiful final eruption of each performance.

The Belaggio Fountains are entirely free to watch, a rarity in Las Vegas. I’ve been to Las Vegas over 30 times, but I need to see this fantastic spectacle at least once, every time I visit.

7. Eat at an All-You-Can-Eat- Buffet

Las Vegas is also known for the enormous diversity and high quality of its restaurants. And what goes more hand in hand with Las Vegas than the famous All-You-Can-Eat-Buffet?

Eat as much delicious culinary delicacies like Crab Legs, Sushi, Luxury Salads, BBQ, Steak, Sliders and desserts as far as the eye can see, as you can. The best buffets can be found in Caesar’s Palace (Bacchanal Buffet) and Cosmopolitan (Wicked Spoon Buffet).

6. Visit the High Roller

The High Roller is a Ferris wheel that is located on the LINQ promenade, an area in which you can shop, stroll around and eat. Step into one of the 28 huge pods that will take you up to almost 555 feet / 170 meters in height – enjoy stunning views over the Las Vegas Strip.

In addition to the regular rides, you can also book special experiences in the High Roller: from a Chocolate Tasting Experience and a Yoga Experience (really!) to an Open Bar – drink as many cocktails as you can during the 30-minute ride.

5. Gamble in a real Las Vegas casino

Of course, you can’t visit Las Vegas without taking a chance in one of the many casinos. Whether you like slot machines, Blackjack, Roulette or maybe even the dice game Craps, in Las Vegas you can gamble 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The ideal place to try out your best roulette strategy!

In Las Vegas, you’ll find the most modern slot machines, with the widest variety of themes. Megabucks and Wheel of Fortune slots with a progressive jackpot remain popular, but Hollywood-themed slots such as The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, are just as much a hit with slots players.

An additional advantage, the cocktails are free while you’ re gambling. Of course, don’t forget to tip the cocktail waitress $€1 to $€2 per drink – if you want her to come back with more free drinks.

4. Visit Downtown Las Vegas

Downtown Las Vegas is about a 10-minute drive from Las Vegas and has an entirely different atmosphere compared to the Strip. In Downtown Las Vegas all casinos are within walking distance – a big contrast with the where everything distances between hotels on the Strip. The table limits are lower, the atmosphere is more relaxed, and the rules are a lot more favourable for the player.

You can find the best bars, eateries and restaurants throughout Downtown, such as Pizza Rock (the best Pizza in Las Vegas), Eat (delicious breakfast). If you are feeling romantic, Hugo’s Cellar (inside the Four Queens) is an excellent choice. The ladies get an old-fashioned red rose, and salads are prepared “table side”, on the spot.

Most casinos are located on Fremont Street, where you’ ll find a unique music and light show on the ceiling several times a day. But there is even more, Fremont Street regularly features rock bands for free. And these are often superior cover bands or even (fairly well-known) artists like Vince Neil of Motley Crue/Poison.

If you are thinking of booking a luxurious room in a lavish hotel with a decent swimming pool like the ones on The Strip, then you are out of luck in Downtown Las Vegas.

However, a new urban project in the making, Circa Resort & Casino, aims to change that when they open their doors December of 2020.

3. Ride the tourist attractions on top of the Stratosphere Tower

On top of the Stratosphere Tower, just past the end of the north side of the Strip, at a height of 1250 feet / 350 metres, you will find several attractions for the real daredevils among us. The Big Shot will take you even higher up in the air, at a speed of 43 miles / 70 kilometres per hour. Open your eyes, if you dare, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Las Vegas valley.

Other attractions include the Sky Jump (a controlled freefall alongside the tower), Insanity and the X-Scream. The latter is a kind of roller coaster-like attraction that takes you almost 10 metres over the edge of the tower.

2. Go sky diving from a height of 16,000 feet / 5,000 meters with a view of the city

Just outside Las Vegas, it is possible to make a tandem Sky Dive with an instructor, from a height of 16,000 feet / 5,000 meters, with the Las Vegas Strip in the background. After you jump out of an aeroplane, a 60-second free fall follows before the parachute will be opened, and you will float back to earth as if in a dream.

From our own experience, we can tell you that Sky Diving in Las Vegas is both the scariest and the most fantastic thing we have ever done in our lives and probably will ever do. Fan-tas-tic!

1. Sail through the canals of Venice in a gondola

In the Venetian Hotel, you will not only find true to nature copies of the Rialto bridge and the famous San Marco square, but you can also take a Gondola tour through the canals of the hotel, with or without singing Gondolier.

This is all Las Vegas stands for: total madness in the middle of the desert. It’s not really possible, but it’s possible in Las Vegas.

And most important of all, make sure you have fun

Las Vegas is a city where everything is possible, and everything is allowed. Make sure you enjoy all that this beautiful city has to offer. And don’t forget, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. That’s the best part: nobody needs to know what adventures you’ve had when you were half drunk. Be crazy!

Visit a show, a concert or the Craps table. Throw $€20 into the Big Bertha slot machine, where no one ever wins. Wear a crazy outfit. It’s all part of the Vegas experience.

Our top 5 personal Vegas rituals

We’ve made more than 25 Las Vegas trips by now.

Call us crazy, but this beautiful city never bores.

There is so much to do, so much to discover and so much to experience in Sin City, that the hunger for more is never satisfied.

On every return flight, we look at each other and say: we’ve had enough for the time being. A few months later it starts itching again. After a couple of months more our next trip is planned, curious as we are about the new restaurants, new shows and sometimes also new hotels.

At the same time, we also notice ourselves doing several things over and over again. It feels so good and wonderfully familiar.

These kinds of rituals complete our Vegas trips.

These are the 5 things we do on every Vegas trip.

1. Feed a $ 100 bill to the first Wheel of Fortune slot machine we see.

We make sure that we always have $ 100 bill in our pockets when we arrive at the airport. A $ 100 bill plus some loose change to be precise, the shuttle bus driver gets some tip money as well.

As soon as we touch down, we aren’t looking for the luggage belt. No, we’re looking for a Wheel of Fortune slot machine. One with a progressive jackpot of a few million dollars. Who cares if the chances of you winning are only minimal? You can’t win if you don’t try.

Usually, our $ 100 bill does not even last 5 minutes, especially if it turns out to be a $ 1 or $ 5 slot. And no, we have never won the jackpot. But that first adrenaline rush when you feed this crackling $ 100 bill into the slot: wonderful.

2. Book a room in the Cosmopolitan with a view on the Bellagio fountains

Our favourite hotel in Las Vegas by far is the Cosmopolitan Hotel. And our favourite view is on those beautiful Bellagio fountains, with the blue hot air balloon and the Eiffel Tower at Paris Hotel across the street.

By booking a Fountain View Room or sometimes even a Terrace Suite at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, we combine the best of both worlds: a beautiful room at the fabulous Cosmopolitan Hotel with the most gorgeous view in the world: those unique, majestic fountains of the Bellagio Hotel.

3. Shoot some dice at the Craps table

In our opinion, craps is the most entertaining table game there is. Chance would have it that Las Vegas is the craps capital of the world bar none.

We can’t wait to dive into the casino in Las Vegas and find a craps table.

Sure, Las Vegas is known for it’s all you can eat buffets. From mountains of crab legs with melted butter and fresh sushi until you drop to endless desserts. You can eat until you feel like you’re about to burst.

We have discovered, though, that Las Vegas has a lot more to offer than just buffets. Nowhere else in the world can you find so many starred restaurants as in Las Vegas. Okay, maybe in New York, but other than that nowhere else really.

Dinner in a celebrity chef, high-end restaurant is an experience in itself. From the perfect service and delicious food to absurdly beautiful interior design: it may cost you an arm and a leg, but it’s worth it all.

Restaurants like SW Steakhouse, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon and Bazaar Meat will create unforgettable memories.

5. See a Cirque de Soleil show

It may be a huge cliché, but a Cirque de Soleil show is an unmissable part of our Vegas trips. One, Love, Ka or Le Reve (officially not a Cirque de Soleil show, but equally excellent) are a real feast for the senses.

The music, dancing, acrobatics and the special effects: it doesn’t matter if you haven’t got a clue what is going on with the storyline. So much is happening, and the performers are so talented that there’s nothing you can do but sit back in awe and enjoy it to the fullest.

Runner up: Quickly score a Double Double at In ‘n Out Burger

The burgers of In ‘n Out have a near-mythical status. The menu is minimal, everything is prepared fresh, and the restaurants are kept spotless. What’s striking, too: the staff is always cheerful. In ‘n Out seems to appreciate – and reward – its staff particularly well.

We cannot help but have a Double Double at In ‘n Out Burger when we’re in Vegas. Regardless of what time in the day.
